Do energy drinks really give you energy?

Asked by Supacase (14563points) February 3rd, 2010

Red Bull, 5-Hour Energy, etc.

I know some use excessive caffeine and others use herbal concoctions, but do any of the actually do anything or are they all gimmicks?

4 hour energy- sorta. nothing really works

They sure do…if you’re willing to be giddy fool for five hours with an extended after crash.

That five hour energy drink has worked for me before. I work two jobs, and I used to have a different second job that was more ridiculous than this one. I used that with good results exactly as shown on tv. I would be wide awake and alert within a minute or so with no crash later. I had no palpitations or jitters, and it wasn’t the pseudo clarity that one gets with some drugs. But for whatever reason, it didn’t always work, and it never worked a second time, if I took one in another five or six hours.
But when it worked, it worked very very well.

A few years back I was doing a lot of driving for some family issues and to make it the 200 miles back home I’d mix a Red Bull with an orange Mountain Dew and that kept me awake. I did that for about three years.

My girlfriend and I have developed an affinity for the taste of Monster Java energy drinks and occasionally pair them up with the 5-hour energy shooters for an extra boost. The downside is that there can be a severe crash after the Monster drinks. I have done a couple of the 5-hour shooters by themselves on mornings when I didn’t get enough sleep or just needed an extra boost without ill-effect or a crash later. Two shooters by themselves are a rapid awakening without a crash, but as with any energy drink/shooter, you can easily develop a tolerance and should probably take a break from using them when that happens. They are designed to pep you up, but they’re not exactly the healthiest way to achieve results.

Yes and No. An energy drink once in a while can definatly give you a boost for a little while. The problem is the drinks with a lot of sugar will give you a debilitating crash once the caffeine wears off. The 5 hour energy drinks and such helps in a pinch but tends to leave me very jittery. Unfortunately like anything you overdose on, they stop working. I know people who have had to up the drink sizes frequently to get the same energy boost. After a while it just doesn’t work. Also, if your extremely exhausted those drinks don’t work at all.

that along with caffeine, guarana, over 16 teaspoons of sugar, and a substantial amount of B vitamins and crap ingredients no one has ever heard of
