Teachers: Does retirement money get transferred if you move to a new state?

Asked by SundayKittens (5834points) February 4th, 2010

I taught for one year in South Carolina before moving to Oklahoma…I’m extremely ignorant about money/retirement things. Did the money paid into my retirement plan transfer to my OK or is it floating somewhere in South Carolina?

A few states have authorized their retirement systems to transfer participant’s credit to other retirement systems. If the transfers are authorized between retirement systems in the same state, they are called “intrastate reciprocity.” If the transfers are authorized between systems in different states, they are called “interstate reciprocity”.

In your case, you will need to check with your current plan administrators whether the interstate reciprocity exist between SC and OK. If so, they should be able to direct you on the things you need to do.

Maybe or maybe not. You can probably flip it into a new plan easily enough though.

More than likely it’s still kicking around in SC, and will be until you take positive steps to transfer it yourself. Contact your Plan Administrator, and if you don’t know who that is (I don’t save all that paper, either), then contact your former HR department, who can help you get in touch with the right people.

@CyanoticWasp with only one year served, it’s probably gone by now, what with the devaluation of portfolios in the lst 2 years. Plus one year, does not provide much vesting of the contributions. . . I would probably ask around but wouldn’t waste too much time trying to dig up something that’s not there.
