How was it possible for me to snap the bone in my big toe last night without noticing at the time?

Asked by TheJoker (2795points) February 9th, 2010

I woke up this morning, & the big toe on my right foot was really sore… no bruising, but then I rarely ever bruise. The Dr in the office next to mine just took a peek as a favour & it appears that I’ve snapped the bone in the end bit of my toe, right across, roughly at the same place as the start of the nail. I wasn’t aware of doing this last night, & I wasn’t drunk…. any ideas anyone?

Maybe you got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and stubbed it or hit it on something or stepped on it weird, and don’t remember it today.

Sounds like a RiverDance injury to me ;)

@jfos…. Thats quite possible, I do crack my shin against the bedstead on quite a regular basis… & I do have 2 cats to trip me up in the dark.

@lucillelucillelucille… Hehehehe, I suspect I’d break an aweful lot more than just my toe… :)

Could be a repetitive stress fracture that just let loose…have you ever injured that toe before? Bone degeneration or osteoporosis perhaps? Go see your doc!

@TheJoker I cannot even begin to imagine. You would normally have to really put a tremendous amount of stress on it to fracture that bone. I mean, a major trauma with all the accompanying noise and pain. I would say that if you felt nothing at all there is something else going on here. Either there was a freak accident in which a number of odd, unlikely circumstances akin to winning the Irish Sweepstakes came together all at once, or…Hmm. Do you have missing time? Any strange bruises or possibly implants in your skull? Maybe you should check the basement for pods….~

@Cruiser…. I think you could be onto something with the repetitive stress fracture, I’ll check it out tonight. Thanks buddy :)

@Trillian… Missing time you say! Weeeeeeeeelllllllll, me & time do have an interesting arrangement… Deffinately no pods though!

@TheJoker I’ve had several repetitive stress fractures of the metatarsals. It really can come on you all of a sudden, although it is less common in the toes than in the other foot bones. Do you get enough vitamin D?

Your Toe Sex was far too rough!

Next time do it safely and wear sandles until you’re really ready for the rough stuff!

@Dr_Dredd…. Probably not, in all honesty. I’m not a huge fan of the sun.

@SomNinja…. Perhaps I should strap-on a splint before I start eh?!
