Can you Import playlists and music library information of a backup of an iTunes database file and library xml file?

Asked by Fallstand (1130points) March 3rd, 2008

I messed up my itunes on my Mac and in the process of fixing it I lost my library and playlists. However I have a very recent back up of my iTunes library file and library XML file is there a way to import these files and retrieve my lost playlists after I import my library back in?

Just replace the “iTunes Library” and “iTunes Music Library.xml” files with the old ones. Do this while iTunes is closed.

The new ones can be found in /Music/iTunes

If you have added any tracks to iTunes since the back-up they probably won’t show up.

Playlists may get lost unless you’ve exported them already as XMLs.

there is shareware that will copy your playlists, play counts etc from your iPod (and iPhone?) back to your iTunes. I used it once and it worked great!

@ckinyc – Do you remember what that app was called?

I believe Senuti will copy the metadata back from the iPod along with the tracks. Try that.
