How do Metal vocalists scream so loud and consistently?

Asked by Blackberry (33949points) March 2nd, 2010 from iPhone

It is quite a skill. I love the fury and emotion that comes from their songs. But how do they scream like that? Doesn’t it hurt?

Maybe their cells are filled with rage from all the smoking and the drinking and the drugs? Okay, that’s a major assumption. I don’t know. GQ

Apparently there is some sort of technique? If you believe anything Wikipedia says anyway…

“Some “screaming” vocalists have had problems with their throats, voices, vocal cords, and have even had major migraines from screaming when doing it incorrectly. Some vocalists of metalcore bands have had to stop screaming, or making music altogether, or even undergo surgery (such as Corey Taylor of Slipknot) due to screaming in harmful ways that damage the vocal cords.

Damage to the vocal cords can usually be avoided by using a screaming technique that incorporates the thoracic diaphragm. By using this technique, air is pushed out with the stomach, taking tension off of the throat.”

There’s a DVD if you’re interested called “The Zen of screaming”.

clearly they’re very passionate so maybe instead of telling the world how they feel they want to TELL THE WORLD HOW THEY FEEL

A lot of the recordings that you hear are altered in post-production, and don’t necessarily match what you hear when you see them live. A bit disappointing, but ah well.

@Cruiser-Whooosh!...Ahem…Slash backed you up?

It has to come form the diaphragm. If the scream comes from your throat, it’ll mess up your throat. Breathe in, and push the air from your diaphragm out really hard and fast.

I’m told a lot of it comes from the throat, rather than the mouth. I can’t quite imagine it, seems weird to me. I’ve no real answer, but I do indeed hail such skill, it’s impressive.
Apparently, real good metal vocalists learn to sing opera, and then they use this for metal.

Cradle of Filth and Raised Fist come to mind.

I heard that it is meant to come from your diaphragm, but you kind of sigh the air over your vocal chords, kind of, so it goes down and rough as apposed to outwards like normal singing… except obviously there’s more technique to get ze power. I don’t know though, I wish I could do it, it’s damn awesome. =) \m/
