That is a killer calc. and you have to be just bummed…have you tried switching the batts around? are the contacts bent or out of line?

gailcalled's avatar

Try using a pencil eraser on the contacts.

Why do you even use a TI-83 or whatever? I was mad when I had to spend a hundred bucks on one, only to realize I would never need it. Even in college, I took Bio for majors and Chem for majors, calc, real-estate, finance (I eventually switched to business). . . I’ve never utilized the functions on a 83 to make it worth a hundred bucks!

I’d trade it in, and buy a TI-BA2+ for thirty bucks and have extra cash :) That’s a calculator that you can actually use in real life.

So I guess you can do ANOVA with a BA2+?

mrrich724's avatar

No, I guess I was thinking about which calc I actually use in real life, not the one in school. But I’m not a physicist or engineer, so you’re right, it may very well be relevant to the person asking!

sorry

yea its my friends, so either i fix it or buy him a new one and they are uber expensive. and i have no idea what ANOVA or BA2+ means…should i take it apart and play with its insides?

dpworkin's avatar

Why is it your fault? Did you try cleaning the contacts?

nbabgtimer's avatar

no what part is the contacts?

dpworkin's avatar

The little brass dealies that hold the batteries. You can clean them with a pencil eraser.

mrrich724's avatar

ANOVA is analysis of variance, BA2+ is just another model of calculator, but it’s a financial calculator rather than scientific.

@nbabgtimer On multiple occasions, I thought I killed my calculator but all I did was accidentally bump the buttons that affect the contrast. Sounds foolish, but have you tried making the screen darker?

gailcalled's avatar

@dpworkin: Can you believe that I know what battery contacts are and how to clean them and @nbagtimer doesn’t? Brave new world.

dpworkin's avatar

I believe you have a great command of fundamental knowledge, @gailcalled .

nbabgtimer's avatar

haha im still learning about the calculator world. but yea i will try to see if i jsut messed with the contrast thanks for advice. and the pencil eraser didnt work but the inside of the calculator may have gotten messed up from some crums i had in my bag with it. ill try later tomorow. thanks guys

maybe the ON/OFF button is faulty and contaminated.
Remove the batteries and thoroughly soak in pure alcohol (zippo lighter fluid will do the trick. Press all buttons repeatedly whilst wet, shake dry then allow plenty of time to thoroughly dry in a warm place. Replace batteries and hope for the best.
