Why go to work sick?

Asked by peachpit (41points) March 7th, 2010

If you have an excusable absence from work due to poor health or sickness, why would you go in rather than stay at home?

I get paid hourly with no sick time, so if I’m not really sick, I go to work.

Because you can’t afford to miss the 8 hours of pay time, especially if you get really sick, and have to see the doctor sans health insurance.

Because I get very little sick time – all of which I end up using for when my daughter is sick. I’m also paid hourly.

The good news is I work alone in my office, so I can sip my tea and take my cold meds and nobody bothers me.

All of the above, generally.

Also: in this crappy economy, very often, someone who is absent a lot is the first one on the chopping block when the layoffs come. If you are “unreliable,” and if work gets done just fine without you, why do they need you?

When labor is a commodity, and when the next person behind you is more than willing to work sick and for less money than you make, you must be able to match that to keep your job. Letting “the Market” solve the labor problem may be cost-effective, but it sure is inhumane sometimes.

Middle-class people used to be provided with a reasonably fair work contract all the way up to the late 1980’s. Now it resembles the one they used to reserve for the Blacks and the underclasses. No one gets fair treatment on holidays, sick pay or overtime.

It’s unrealistic to not go to work everytime you’re sick. We have bills and some get paid hourly and some have important jobs.

@dpworkin: This is true. I work every holiday except Christmas day. It’s the only holiday we’re closed.

Just stay home if you’re sick. Why should everyone else have to be exposed to your sickness? We all get plenty of sick time unless you’re a part time contractor or consultant.

You shouldn’t be going to work if you are sick;you could spread it to others and then they will be sick.Stay home.

Consider if you may give your virus or disease to others. If not, then, work if you can still take it and not bother your family afterwards.

I go to work sick if it is nothing contagious or if I have taken precautions because I need the money.

However, if I go to work contagious without precautions I could kill people… I work in a hospital. I have gone to work and been called in to work sick before due to short staffing and worn a mask throughout the shift for my patient’s protection. Oh, each of us is fitted for a mask for our protection, but it goes both ways.

I am also careful to tell staffing what I have before I come in.

Unless I’m too sick to leave my bed, then I don’t think it’s necessary to take time off work. Us humanoids are made of strong stuff. Then there’s money and pretty much everything else that’s been mentioned.

Most hourly workers can’t afford to stay home. They live pay check to pay check and a shortage is a real hardship.

Some people don’t get paid if they don;t go in, and if they don;t get paid they can’t afford rent etc.

Some people will lose their job if they take time off.

Is it any wonder people go to work when they’re sick?
