Research report topic?

Asked by Grim (384points) March 10th, 2010

So my english teacher has asked the class to come up with a research topic which we will be writing a 10 to 12 page essay on and I am looking for some fun options. If any of you have any ideas that you think would make for an interesting and fun paper to write please tell me. Thanks!

Island Paradises – Why Don’t We All Move?

Serious question which would be fun to research. Think of the 19th century immigrants to the US, crossing the ocean to work in sweatshops, coal mines and slaughterhouses.

I’m talking to you, great-grandpa. You were on a boat already. Hmmmm, I can go to Bermuda or Milwaukee. Hmmmm, tough choice…

Try “how to write a reasearch paper and its difficulties”... so you learn how to write one and save time

If you choose any of these topics, please do send me the paper.

If you need a real challenge you can do your research on the rational woman…might take more than 10–12 pages though.

Absolutely any topic can be interesting. The more you learn about it, the more fascinating it gets.

Why are there so many hexagonal shapes in nature?
How many cultures have a myth about a great flood?
How does the eye see color?
What do child prodigies have in common?
What is the process of growing, harvesting, and marketing bananas?
How does a television work?
What is the history of trepanning?
. . . et cetera.

Or maybe the subject could be Why men are always portrayed as bumbling idiots on TV? Could it be a mirror of the real world.

The answer by @Jeruba has shamed me. She’s totally right.

So what’s a good place to start? What are you curious about now? Ask questions about something, anything. Your questions are probably too vague—for example, why is Lady Gaga so popular? This can be good as a driving theme in research, but is a bit difficult to tackle. Try to be as specific as you can—for example, how is Lady Gaga’s approach to fashion informed by her conception of celebrity and fame?

When you have a question that’s interesting, and seems like something that you can ask and expect to get an answer, then you have a good research topic.
