Are there any good home remedies for getting musty smells out of clothes?

Asked by figbash (7483points) March 13th, 2010

I shop at thrift stores a lot and find that I’m having a hard time getting the musty smell out of clothes with standard detergent and a few wash cycles.

Are there any tried-and-true home remedies I should try? Maybe adding baking soda or vinegar to the wash cycle?

I looked through the previous questions and one mentioned using vodka in a spray bottle for some fabrics. Does that really work and could I put that in the wash? An ideas on proportions I should use, if that’s the case?

P.S. Please, no Febreze. I absolutely hate the smell of that stuff

Sunshine! Hang them out on a dry, breezy, sunny day, and bring them back in smelling far better than any smelly bunch of chemicals could manage.

Spray your cloth with essential oil(lavender). This will not only disguise its smell, but it will also make it fresher, and helps you to relax.

Rinse them in vinegar, then in fresh water. Vinegar kills mold.

I don’t really know but you might try throwing some lemon juice, and don’t be stingy with it, into the wash water. I spilled a bottle of fish oil, gotta get those omega-3’s, in my refrigerator and cleaned it up with a ratty old towel, then like an idiot, threw the towel in with another load of laundry. Jeez! That god awful smell was in everything! It took a whole lot of lemon juice, I just kept pouring in the quart bottles, and several washes, but I eventually got the odor out of my clothes, etc. So I’m thinking, if lemon juice can get the smell of fish oil out of fabrics, then it might be good for freshening up things. But, I also get most of my clothes a thrift stores and have never really had a problem with mustiness. Sometimes I find things that smell a lot of moth balls but I leave those behind.

Sunshine. Lots and lots of sunshine. Also hanging clothes over a bathtub full of steaming scented water helps, and then sunshine.

Wash with detergent as usual, but add two cups of white vinegar to the final rinse.

Or, perhaps sunshine.

Add about ½ cup of ammonia to the wash water. It will break down any oils left in the material.

Separate the fabrics when washing and make sure they are really dry before folding and putting away.

Thanks, all! I really appreciate the suggestions.

I’ll chime in with the wash and damp dry in sunshine but that’ll only work for regular mustiness and not much towards ridding sweat stain smells or mildew if the items were ever left damp too long.
