The program may have made a backup which was deleted when you closed out. Don’t write to the drive, and run a recovery application immediately (don’t run the app from the same drive, either – use a thumb drive instead.)

I don’t know anything about Pages, but do a search for the title of the paper and maybe it put an auto save somewhere.

Did you look in the Trash? Sometimes recovered documents go there on Mac.

If you’re using OS X 10.5 or newer, you should have the Time Machine feature, which lets you go back in time to see your files at that moment in time.

@PandoraBoxx IT’s not in the trash. I didn’t “delete” it I just didn’t save it when I closed out.

@njnyjobs My time machine isn’t configured (I don’t know what that means.

In looking at the various comments on this topic in various forums, I think you’re SOL. If you didn’t save it at all, but closed the app without naming your file, Pages does not autosave.

It’s funny that it doesn’t, because Mail saves what you’re typing in an e-mail as a draft without asking you.

I’ve been fried on my PC at work so many times, I save automatically every two or three paragraphs as a habit.

You should be able to get Office for Mac on campus for about $10. It has an awesome format that’s not in the PC version called Notebook. It can record class lectures at the same time it formats your typing into an outline form. Totally handy. I use it at work every time I go to a training session.

@PandoraBoxx I actually attend school online, but that does sound useful.

@Facade – This wont help you recover what you lost but will help you in the future. ForeverSave Lite is free and will auto save based on criteria you set. You can assign it to work with any program you use. When ever you open a program not on the list it asks you if you want to add it.

Good luck with your recovery and I am sorry to hear about your troubles. I have had that happen to me. It stinks.

If it’s not a Mac I don’t know

What @dpworkin said. Don’t know about Pages, but MS Word will automatically back up a file as you write it.

In my day, the only way to delete a paper would be to actually physically throw it in the trash, because I’d have to type it out with a typewriter.
