Does peanut butter contain a toxin, or toxic fungus?

Someone in my line mentioned that the peanut butter has a tendency to go rancid or worse. They also said their husband was a molecular biologist and that pb has a toxin, or toxic fungus or both in it. Anyone hear something similar?
