What kind of meals increase your craving for sweets? Refined carbs can increase your craving for refined carbs, like sweets. Making sure that your meals contain more
complex carbs might help.

Drink more water. Fruits and vegetables.

Cane sugar is natural. I guess it is holistic, too, since it doesn’t seem to be partistic.

@dpworkin Hahahahaha! Oh. My ribs. ;-)

Chromium is meant to help with glucose metabolism, and helps to maintain normal blood sugar levels…I have heard of people taking this to make cravings less intense.

Usually though, If you reduce your carb/sugar intake, after a while (like 2 weeks or so) you wont feel the cravings anymore.

But yeah…Chromium.

@Trillian @dpworkin Wouldn’t donuts be more holistic?

Rarebear's avatar

@janbb No, you’re thinking of donut holes.

Hoodia cactus extract worked for me. Also, drinking lots of water really is the best way.

@Rarebear This wasn’t another question about healthcare, was it?

Trillian's avatar

@mrrich724 I don’t know. Hoodia cactus? Does anybody know? A Scot, I would think.

@Trillian

Yes it works. That’s why they sell it in pill form. The story goes something like ‘the hunters (back in hunter/gatherer days) would take some hoodia with them when they went on expeditions to curb their appetite and allow them to be in the wilderness longer and hunt.

Chromium picolinate also works ok.

I second the hoodia. I’ve only taken it for a week but amazing appetite controller!

If you stop eating them, the craving will end.

I agree with @Rarebear . I was able to stop any and all cravings just by eating right. Keeping well hydrated and eating fruits and vegetables will leave you feeling satisfied and cut your cravings down. I have a sweet tooth and carb cravings. When I eat well, I find I feel so satisfied that even if I think of candy or carbs, I’m just not in the mood for it. And if I decide to have some, then it is very little. Especially if I make sure to have fruits or vegetables first before eating the carb or sweet.
However I suck at doing any one thing for long. Especially since I sometimes just want to go for something quick to eat. But it does work. You just have to be willing to be mindful of eating right at all times.

I find I crave carbs when I’m overly tired.

Carbs give us a lovely feeling of well-being quickly. @PandoraBoxx I think we all feel more alert for awhile after carbs, I used that idea for night shifts. Didn’t always work!

PandoraBoxx's avatar

@faye, yes, unfortunately the spike wears off, and you have to eat more. :(

We made a lot of popcorn on nights.

Regular exercise helps. Also eat several small meals a day instead of 2 or 3 big ones, with breakfast being high in protein and low in carbs.

Those of you that like hoodia- There are different manufacturers, right? Which do you use?

faye's avatar

Mine is Jamieson-Hoodia Gordonii from South Africa- 250 mg. I’m doing the opposite of breakfast suggestions. I am eating a toasted piece of my homemade bread (oversized) (Michael Smith’s no knead bread) with butter and jam and feel satisfied fo hours!

You may want to get screened for diabetes. I had similar cravings because my blood sugar levels were out of control. Fortunately I caught it early and got control with just diet and exercise right now.

Chewing gum can reduce your appetite. I don’t know anything more holistic than that.

JeffVader's avatar

How about some carbs…. they’re both natural & wholeistic.

Protein powder mixed with a bit of yogurt. Till your hunger goes away. Plus fiber-rich vegetables and salads. Your hunger won’t come back for many hours. Carbs only make you hungry again and again. Exceptions are lentils, peas etc.
