Does anyone know where I can get dreadlocks?

Asked by crystalvegan (368points) March 26th, 2010

I live in Detroit, and I’m wanting to get dreads started soon and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could go to get them in the Detroit area…even an hour in any direction and into Canada as well. I’m white, so I need people who work with my hair.

I think you have to go to Jamaica.

tinyfaery's avatar

You don’t get them, you have to go through a process that includes putting waxes and stuff in your hair and never washing it. It’s long and arduous and not all hair will take to it.

@dpworkin – Thanks! So much help! Haha

Yea, I thought you just stop taking care of your hair for a few months and BOOM dreads.

Dreds

@tinyfaery – You can get them done, and there are plenty of salons dedicated to only doing dread related hair. I just can’t seem to find one, or anyone for that matter, within driving distance. Salons basically start the dreads, but yes, it does take a good 2–3 months to season them and mold them to what you want.

crystalvegan's avatar

@ChazMaz – Haha Well, sort of. But the truth is, if you don’t wash your dreads at least once a week, oil builds up and the dreads wont take. It’s good to wash them every 3 days or so.

I would look for a West Indian neighborhood and then a salon in it, but I suppose that’s what you are looking to find.

Wish I knew about the Detroit Area – both times I had dreadlocks I had them done here in NY…the person that dreaded them the first time around now lives in L.A., I believe, but she was incredible (Maybe email her and ask if she can recommend anyone in the area where you are). Here is a pic of my dreads from 2006. They can be great don’t let anyone tell you differently.

—Sorry but white girls with dreads is just…—-

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@tinyfaery Don’t know…as I’ve said before, it pretty much made me the cat’s meow with the lesbians~...I loved them but couldn’t stand ‘em around July when I was in labor so I cut ‘em.

At the grocery store next to the donuts.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – Thanks for picture, your dreads are beautiful! I get a lot of negative responses when I talk about getting dreads, people get so weird about them, like it’s a special club only certain people can belong too….and I really don’t get why. I’ve always loved them, and I’m at a point in my life where I’m just ready to do it.

crystalvegan's avatar

@tinyfaery – I LOVE dreads on white people. Why does it only have to be a black thing? That’s stupid….makes no sense.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@crystalvegan You have to take care of your dreads – get good products and redread often esp. in the beginning. After that, it’ll be okay. Good luck – I miss mine sometimes. The second time around I didn’t have rainbow extensions in and my hair was shorter so it was easier to care for them.

I think some women look sexy in dreads, others just look dirty. It all depends. (And I’m talking white ppl inclusive here)

crystalvegan's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – Yeah, my hair is shoulder length, so my plan was to have my hair dreaded, and just add some permanent extenders to the ends, to make them a bit longer so they don’t stick out. But I wouldn’t mind some natural fibers in there….wool…ect.

crystalvegan's avatar

@mrrich724 – I agree. There can definitely be a fine line between dirty and awesome. The most important thing is to bathe daily. Haha Which I do. And I am a fanatic about smelling good! So Im thinking mine will be awesome. Just sayin…..

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@crystalvegan Dreads do not smell! Because you do wash them – sure it’s once a week, but I never had a problem with any odor from my head and I do bikram yoga obsessively which makes me sweat for an hour and a half 3x a week.

crystalvegan's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – I know they don’t. I was talking about what mrrich724 said about people ‘looking’ dirty with dreadlocks. Dreads need to be washed often, and because of that, they smell just fine. I do have some friends with beautiful dreads, but their overall cleanliness is questionable. They are just dirty people who happen to have dreads. But no, I think dreads smell just fine.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@crystalvegan Yeah, generally speaking my non-dreaded hair looks ‘dirtier’ as in oilier than when I had dreads

crystalvegan's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – Yeah…...don’t you have to use a special shampoo that strips your hair of all oil and buildup when you have dreads? What did you use?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@crystalvegan My god, I can’t remember, lol…I feel like I used a soap…it had this little toddler with dreads on the front, he was bad-ass…maybe my husband will remember, I sent him this q – I got it at Ricky’s in NYC. Edit: found it, hahah! Here.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – Knotty Boy stuff is fantastic, I hear. I will definitely use their products.

George Clinton’s house.

slick44's avatar

@ChazMaz… lmao. that was the funniest thing i have heard all day.

Jude's avatar

@ubersiren You’ll find some funk there, too. I mean, “who wants the funk?”..“he’s got the funk”.

“gotta have that funk’’

slick44's avatar

I read somthing about someone with dreds, and i guess they had like a hundred different kinds of bugs living in them. GROSS

ubersiren's avatar

@jjmah I bet there are both dreads and funk in his shower drain.

PacificToast's avatar

I pretty sure you have to buy waxes and stuff to create the affect. If your hair is fine, I don’t think it’ll work.

Ria777's avatar

so @crystalvegan, you can look in Craigslist for people who will do them. do a keyword search for “loc”(as opposed to lock) or “loctician”. speaking of which, I found this…

Knottyboy.com has tons for FAQ’s and tips on making your own dreads.

thriftymaid's avatar

You don’t go buy them. You dread your own hair. Just google it. The instructions are available.

crystalvegan's avatar

@Ria777 – Thanks, I never thought of looking there, but I will now!

crystalvegan's avatar

@thriftymaid – Calm down. I know you don’t “buy” them, but people that are well versed in the area can start them for me. I see nothing wrong with getting a little help.

thriftymaid's avatar

@crystalvegan Put an ad in your school paper. I don’t know if salons do it or not. I would think using the phone and the Yellow Pages would be more productive than this.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

@crystalvegan don’t give up if this is what you want. My daughter, who is as white as a girl can be, had them just after graduating from high school. In her case, she had (only) the assistance of friends that had graduated with, who wore their own hair that way. I never got involved with the process, but as far as I know she did it mainly on her own.

For her the phase only lasted a year or two (and I thought she looked better when she cut her hair nearly as short as mine to get rid of them when she decided to do that), but it didn’t seem so difficult for her to create or maintain them.

crystalvegan's avatar

@CyanoticWasp – Thank you. I did end up finding a girl who goes to my school who has dreads and she is more than willing to do them and for super cheap. It’s going to be a long process but I’m eager to get them started and hopefully in 6 months, I’ll have nice matured dreads. I just really love them….always have.
