Why don't I get fat?

Asked by Vincentt (8094points) March 8th, 2008

At the moment I’m fasting, and it has made me realize that I eat a lot normally. However (and I’m happy with that, of course), I never get fat. In fact, I’m pretty underweight if you ask me. I do play football a lot and cycle to school, and when I eat a lot it’s mostly dinner, not sugar-rich in-betweens. However, surely if you eat a lot then it doesn’t really matter what it is?

How old are you?

When we are young, our metabolisms are higher…and then all of a sudden – it quits. That’s an exaggeration…but it certainly explains why healthy habits and lifestyles are important…more so in older age. [train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it].

I’m 18 currently, could that be before it quits? I am quite slow in my development…

People experience changes in their 30s and 40s. I’m still not fat, and I’m 25. But I’ve seen it happen, and read about it.

I have recently gained a few sympathy pounds for my pregnant wife.

you’re young and you may simply be genetically lucky.
My best friend has always had the eating habits of a billy goat crossed with a grizzly bear. I’ve seen him (routinely) inhale an entire pizza in about 15 minutes.. or eat enough Taco Bell in one sitting to fill a suitcase, YET (with virtually no exercise) he has always had a lean, rock hard physique—complete with an infuriating 6-pack- even now, and we’re in our 30’s.
He’s a genetic freak. Bastard.

It is your bodytype

their are people who eat alot don’t get fat and workout and it is hard to build muscles

Their are people who get fat from anything they eat but build muscle easily

And last their are people who don’t get fat and build muscles easily (buff people)

have you been checked for parasitic worms? people get them more than you think especially from pets.

Vincentt's avatar

@GD – thanks, that’s comforting :)

@busterhymen – no I haven’t, but I also don’t have pets. Why? What would worms have to do with my weight?

squirbel's avatar

He’s referring to tapeworms and the like. It isn’t as common as he claims.

Thanks squirbel, I don’t think that’s it indeed (I’d be having it all my life ;-).

I tease my fiance and tell him he eats with a shovel.. not a fork. he eats like there is no tomorrow, and never gains an ounce. He works out a lot tho, so I think he metabolizes it pretty well. I, on the other hand have a problem with my thyroid, and gain weight just by looking at food. I think you are just young and healthy, and you need lots of food to support your busy life style.

you could have hyperthyroidism
