Pregnancy question: 21 weeks pregnant and not feeling the baby move as much?

Asked by Lothloriengaladriel (1550points) March 31st, 2010

she’s been quite active for the past 3 weeks even waking me up at night because she was moving so much, and now entering my 21st week or so I’m noticing she’s not moving a whole lot anymore, I didn’t get any sleep last night waiting for her to move because I was worried but I did feel her move around this morning but is this normal or should I be worried? We just had our 20 week scan last week, her heart rate was 152 and the doctor said everything looked really good.

She’s doing a lot of growing and no doubt a lot of resting. It could also be that your diet is a little easier or that your not as restless as you were before and she is able to rest more. What you feel, she feels. If you’re extremely stressed or over worked she probably gets restless. It not unusual for the baby to have quite moments. I would only feel my son everytime I stood up or walked. He would stretch and press down on my bladder. When I rested he was very still. My daughter was the opposite. She would be still when I moved and move when I rested. She always did like to mess with my peace of mind. I’ve should’ve known what was coming. LOL
Its normal to freak out at every little change but if your doctor said you were fine than I wouldn’t worry. Especially since you say you feel her move occassionally. And yes, fetuses have high heart beats. After 9 weeks a babies heart rate is in the normal range when its about 155 to 195. She was probably just resting when it was 152.

As long as you feel her move several times a day, I wouldn’t worry. She is getting bigger and more crowded and she also could be in a position where she is inclined to move less.

It’s probably just that she’s running out of room as mentioned above, but don’t hesitate to call your doctor/midwife if you’re concerned. Changes in movement is something that you should look for and tell your health care provider about. You’re not overreacting or freaking out or anything, you’re just being cautious, and that’s good!

I agree with the above posters.

In the “teens” weeks, it’s easy to feel a lot of motion, because she’s swishing around in her comfy bubble. Around this time, especially if you’re on the small side, she’s likely getting a little bit cramped. You’re now in the twilight zone between bouncing off the walls, and seeing little fists and feet around your belly button.

My midwife used to have us do “motion checks”, where we’d eat a little something or have a drink of something sugary (like orange juice), then rest for an hour. During that hour, we were supposed to count the number of times I felt the baby move. As long as it was more than five, the midwife was happy. I don’t think I ever had to actually rest more than ten minutes. ^_^

At 21 weeks, I wouldn’t worry about the amount of movement from one day to the next. After 30 weeks, it gets more important to tune in regularly on activity. But if you do find yourself feeling uneasy, it’s OK to call your midwife or doctor’s office and ask to come in for a quick listen for reassurance.
