How do I turn .ico files into usable icons?

Asked by silverfly (4055points) April 2nd, 2010

I have a bunch of different icon files with the .ico extension on a mac, but I’m not able to pull these into Photoshop to edit them. If they were .png files, I’d be good to go. Can someone help?

Actually, I messed this question up. They aren’t .ico files. They are .icns, so I can’t use that program…

But thanks! Any other suggestions?

.icns is the standard OSX icon formula, so they should be able to open in a vector drawing application like Illustrator. This is a screenshot of a custom Chrome icon in Drawberry (vector drawing app) that was in .icns format.

Otherwise, just change the .icns extension to .png via the “get info” pane and open it in Photoshop that way.
