How about creating a Fluther Book Discussion Group?

Asked by MetroGnome217 (311points) April 4th, 2010

How about a group of us decide on a book to read, then come back here and discuss it. We will vote on a book to read each time depending on the chosen Genre. For example,
Genre #1 – Action/ Adventure
Genre #2 – Mystery
Genre # 3 – ???

To join this group, follow the following steps:
1 – Add “BDG” (book discussion group) as a topic on your profile.
2 – Post a message on this thread with the following info:
*An Action/Adventure book that you would like us to read
*How long you think it will take before we can discuss
*A genre idea for the 3rd book choice

Thanks guys, I think this will be cool

Are you an Oprah fan? I really doubt that you would like the kind of book that I appreciate – and me likewise with you. There is too wide a variation in age, educational standard and native language for it to really work well on a forum like this.

I think it would be a good idea but you probably wouldn’t get many people to participate. I know this isn’t an action/adventure book, but Walden by Henry David Thoreau would be a great book to discuss.

I think a book group would be fine yet better suited for the chat room for discussion.

Yeah, this probably won’t work. The idea is brilliant, but 99% of the time someone tries to start some sort of movement or club of some sort on their own, it fails completely. This will probably fall with that majority.

It sounds like a good idea but I agree that it isn’t suited to a forum like this.

For the third genre, how about sci-fi (that also encompasses alternate history and fantasy)?

Will join. All groups start small and its success will rest on its members, not the nay sayers.

As for how long it will take for someone to read, it all depends on the majority needs of the group. I could go through a book in a day or couple of days, but depending on demands on your time or reading skill it would vary.

Another suggestion might be to ask for a discussion about a particular book. Those that have read it would join in, those that haven’t would not or would read the book quickly to jump in.

I love talking about books that I’ve read and am into. I’d be all over the sci-fi/fantasy. Don’t know that I’d have time to read much right now because of school, but I’d give it a shot. I’m in the middle of a great sci-fi that I had to stop reading due to time constraints. I can’t wait to pick it up again and would love to discuss it with other jellies.

@rahm_sahriv
Great idea, lets all choose a good action or adventure boom that we would like to read

It is extremely easy to create a book discussion group. Just sign on to your favorite ‘group’ site, such as Yahoo Groups , Google groups or any of the already existing groups.
