What are the benefits of using fructose instead of sugar?

Asked by Just_Justine (6511points) April 4th, 2010

I do believe fructose is a natural fruit sugar? What are the benefits of it as opposed to eating normal sugar?

It’s cheaper.

@YARNLADY not where I am? sugar costs R8 a bag fructose costs R36 bag.

None whatsoever. They both contribute – in a major way – to poor health and obesity.

I was going to say it’s cheaper, but I see that @YARNLADY beat me too it. Where are you @Just_Justine? In the states, it’s cheaper.

Just_Justine's avatar

@LunaChick strange that isn’t it? I wonder why we pay so much? I am in South Africa and it is stored on the health shelf. The only benefit I can google is low GI. That is about it.

Just_Justine's avatar

@YARNLADY and @LunaChick so that means we pay $5.50 ish for it. And for sugar we pay $1.20 for about 500 gms

Its a lot more expensive than sugar in Australia as well…..weird.

To be honest, I think if you are going to use any kind of sweetner, it should be honey. Its a lot less processed.

YARNLADY's avatar

@Just_Justine Oh, on a personal use basis I can see that it might be more expensive, but on a business use scale it is much cheaper. I agree with @j0ey that honey is better.

Apparently fructose is worse for you that normal sugar because the body can’t metabolise as efficiently..fruit sugars are supposed to be combined with fibre for efficient processing through the body. Consumption of Fructose leads to faster weight gain….but of course sugar will do that anyway… but fructose is supposed to be ‘worse’.

All the refined sugars are pretty bad for you. It is because they are refined and the good parts of the sugar have been refined away…leaving crystalline structures with little or no nutritional value.

@lynneblundell so strange how they sell it as a healthy sugar here. Just goes to show, plus I tried some and am experiencing runny tummy. What a waste of money!

nebule's avatar

oh yes… it’s more or less as healthy as other manufactured ‘sweeteners’, hence the dodgy tummy…trouble is..they do such a good job of advertising it…my mum eats it and no matter how much I tell her..she keeps on eating it… ho hum…

@YARNLADY @LunaChick I live in North Carolina and here fructose is more expensive than cane sugar. I think what you mean is the high fructose corn syrup which is cheaper. The box of fructose that I bought claimed that it was better for diabetics than cane sugar.

davidbetterman's avatar

@beancrisp I don’t think any sugar (sucrose, fructose, lactose, glucose) is better for diabetics than another. They raise your blood sugar. They raise your blood sugar and get you in insulin trouble.

mattbrowne's avatar

With analog insulin fructose doesn’t have an advantage anymore for type 1 diabetics.

Fructose is a type of sugar. However, sugar does help fill you up when eating food. Fructose does not which with people with little self control (especially in the US) gouge themselves simply because a bag of something with high fructose corn syrup does not fill or take the edge off the hunger.
I don’t know if this is true or not, but I hear that in Europe they rarely ever use high fructose corn syrup in any of their foods, only sugar, which apparently contributes to why Americans tend to be obese and Europeans tend to be on the leaner side of things.
