Have you ever had disorienting dreams/disoreintation causd by sleep pattern?

Asked by WolfFang (880points) April 6th, 2010

I just came home from school around 3:00 p.m. today and after awhile, I just completely knocked out on my couch, I don’t know why I was so tired. I have had irregular sleep patterns, like waking up every 2hrs. or going to bed at 3a.m. and waking up at 6a.m. but last night I slept well. Anyway I vaguley remember a dream about gangsters mixed with things that happened previously today. I wake up, and the clock says 6:15(it doesn’t say a.m. or p.m.) and the light outside is twilight-ish, similar to a sunrise. I didn’t know where the heck I was, then I get freaked out that I slept for 14hrs. but I realize that it is only 6:15 p.m. The effect of going through my day in my dream, mixed my screwed up sleeping patterns made me feel like I just experienced a whole ‘nother 24 hours. Also related, whenever I go to sleep for long periods during the day time, I feel like I missed a large portion of time when it’s only around 3 hrs. or so. Can anybody relate? If so share some of your thoughts on this as well as any experiences you’ve had. [:

Yes, I had gotten to a point once where I had trouble dividing reality from my dreams, partially thanks to my practical experiments with R.E.M. sleep, it really started to irritate me.

After I stopped screwing around with my subconscious though it slowly got better.

@ChaosCross Wow so you were able to manipulate/experiment with sleep in what way?

It’s likely because your circadian rhythm is screwed up. Your body has no idea if its night or day, so the melatonin production is either constant, sporadic, or non-existent, which might contribute to the feeling of disorientation. I have experienced it mildly before, when being sick and napping a lot, but only then.

That has happened to me before. I’d say that it’s happened to most of us. you’re used to sleeping through the night, so when you sleep in the afternoon and wake up the first thing you think is that it’s morning the next day. Not really so unusual, but disorienting is a good way to describe it.

This happened to me too. It was on Elm Street.

lol I can only imagine. @Hexr yeah I know what you mean I’ve had feelings like that even worse when I’m sick with a cold or flu. It’s usually accompanied with psychedelic dreams induced from the cough medicine too :)
