Will you be wearing shoes today?

Asked by sevenfourteen (2422points) April 8th, 2010

Today (according to Toms Shoes) is national “One Day Without Shoes” >> http://www.onedaywithoutshoes.com/ . Has anyone else heard of this? Is anyone participating? What else do you think we should spend a day without to realize just how important it is in our lives?

I think it’s a great idea but I live in Brooklyn and therefore it’s unsafe for us to walk barefoot. (not to bash on Brooklyn but hell there are loads of sharps and used condoms around)

DarkScribe's avatar

Yep. I don’t like being escorted from the building by armed security personnel.

MissAusten's avatar

I’ve never heard of this. I’d be happy to do it if I didn’t have errands to run. I love to be barefoot, and it’s a beautiful day!

It would be interesting to try to get people to spend a day without electricity, or without using cars. Maybe a day without meat, or a day without TV, Internet…just about anything that we take for granted but don’t actually need to survive.

wilma's avatar

I could go without if it was a bit warmer, or if I didn’t have to leave the house.

aprilsimnel's avatar

There is no way in hell I’m walking around in New York City (outside of a park) without shoes on, not unless Tom wants to pay a podiatrist for my course of treatment after my feets get jacked!

wundayatta's avatar

If I were in the tropics, I’d do it. Not here in the North at work, where it’s not acceptable.

Lightlyseared's avatar

I won’t be wearing shoes. I will, however, be wearing combat boots.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

No,I’ll be wearing the shoeboxes ;)

Snarp's avatar

I’ve never heard of it, but I went shoe-less for about a year once in college. It’s not something I would do again at this point in my life, I’d rather just write a check.

Facade's avatar

I haven’t heard of this, but unless I go to the gym later, nope. No shoes for me.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

But, but, there’s snow on the ground! Sorry, but I have to wear some shoes today. Maybe I’ll skip when the weather makes its mind up.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Some boxes look better than the shoes they contain! there are some ugly-assed shoes out there.

I don’t have to go anywhere today, so no, I won’t be wearing any shoes. I’ll be stocking- footed all day.

ucme's avatar

More of a trainers day for me.I’m a “sole” man.

bob_'s avatar

Yes, I will. The barefoot look kind of clashes with my suit and tie.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@jbfletcherfan -I agree! Now if they would just make the boxes with a nice shapely heel,I would be a happy woman!lol

@bob-Just do it! :)

janbb's avatar

80 degrees here and sunny – I wore sandals to work for the first time. Does that count?

jazmina88's avatar

i do barefoot, unless i run errands.

free_fallin's avatar

I’ve never heard of this, but I won’t be wearing shoes today anyway.

CMaz's avatar

I will be wearing my zapatos

Strauss's avatar

I usually only wear shoes when necessary. I am more comfortable barefoot. My job (I will emphasize my new job) requires shoes as part of the dress code, and I can’t afford to lose a day of work. However, next time I’m in the market for shoes, I will definitely consider the possibility of buying them from Tom’s!

BoBo1946's avatar

@ChazMaz oh, the zaps!

gailcalled's avatar

Tick issue too severe. I am wearing socks and sandals…the glass of fashion.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@jbfletcherfan -Would you wear them?? You could also superglue a quarter on the toes and tap like Micheal Flatley!lol
@BoBo1946 -Care to dance??:)

Blackberry's avatar

I’m pretty sure some holidays can still just be simply bad ideas. If there was a holiday that required us to not wear deoderant, I don’t think it would be a good idea regardless.

OneMoreMinute's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Oh I just LOVE your Boxed Loafers! And your matching boxy bag!!!
teehee! funny woman!

Evilistabiatchi's avatar

I rarely wear shoes .

Jude's avatar

Home sick with a cold. I’ll be barefoot today. =)

Anyone up for a pedi?

marinelife's avatar

I am only wearing shoes when I go outside, which is my pattern every day.

filmfann's avatar

I haven’t worn shoes much the last 2 weeks. On Vacation.
That said, I would hesitate to go in public with my ugly ingrown toenails.

BoBo1946's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille all night long! My toes are tough….been stepped on a LOT!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@OneMoreMinute -Thank you! You should try the new flip flop boxes! They’re not cumbersome at all!!
@BoBo1946 -I’ll just step on your feet! Better get the steel-toe boxes! lol

thriftymaid's avatar

Yes, for the first time in several days.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

I’m not planning on wearing shoes today but not because it’s national “one day without shoes day”. It’s because I don’t think I’ll be leaving the house. In the event that I do have to go anywhere, I will put on shoes. I’d prefer not to be arrested for driving w/o shoes or entering a store w/o shoes.

deni's avatar

Yes because I work. The entire summer, except for days I work, are days without shoes for me.

sevenfourteen's avatar

So for all of you who say it’d be nice but you won’t go without shoes, what do you say to all of the children who don’t have the option to put shoes on? I know you live in nyc but isn’t there glass and other ground dangers in other parts of the world? Wouldn’t it be worse if a child somewhere in Central America stepped on glass and couldn’t afford the medical bill to avoid an infection? I’m not trying to stand on my soap box but it’s a lot easier to simply say “I have to wear shoes” instead of “I’d rather just be happy that I can afford this luxury, too bad they can’t”

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@sevenfourteen -I am happy that I can afford shoes,simply put ;)

Snarp's avatar

@sevenfourteen I say how does my not wearing shoes help them? Like I said, I’d rather just write a check, and I think it would be a damn sight more effective as well.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille I’d have to see if they were in my size & what color they were first. LOLLLL

Cruiser's avatar

@sevenfourteen Which is exactly why we do an annual shoe drive with the scouts and also send 100+ pairs to Mexico every year with a co-worker who goes their on his mission trip to build houses for the uber poor!

sevenfourteen's avatar

@Snarp @Cruiser This is an event about raising awareness. I understand there are other ways to help but if you weren’t wearing shoes today people would (most likely) ask, and if you explain it to them that could result in more people wanting to cut checks and more people wanting to find ways to help. I’m not saying that everyone doesn’t give in their own way, but awareness can also be a really strong thing. Look at invisible children and how much change was brought on after the 4 boys made their movies (which were essentially spreading awareness).

downtide's avatar

Never heard of it, and since I walk about 5 miles a day, most of it on city streets, I will definitely NOT be going barefoot.

OneMoreMinute's avatar

@downtide May L-L-Lucille and I recommend the Walking Boxes then?
-joke!

anoop66's avatar

i am barefoot in my home :)

davidbetterman's avatar

@sevenfourteen I’m sure most of us realize that there are people all around the world less fortunate than many of us here in the USA.
Going shoeless one day out of the year will not change that, nor will it raise awareness of this very much.
But it is very nice that you want to help them out.
I always say that we should help the poor folk here in America before we go running around the world throwing our money at everyone else’s problems.
Did you know that there are children starving here in America? And many who don’t have shoes?

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

I didn’t wear shoes all day until my math teacher (who evidently hates poor children in Africa) made me put them back on.

sevenfourteen's avatar

@davidbetterman – you make a good point, so how do you want to help them?

YARNLADY's avatar

I almost never wear shoes. I haven’t bought any shoes for several years. About 5 years ago, I came across a sale of canvas deck shoes for $3 so I bought 5 paid, and they last about a year and a half each. When the sole cracks, I put shoe repair rubber on it and they last another six months or so.

I bought one pair of leather loafers to wear driving a few years ago, and recently put a liner in the bottom where it was getting worn. I have moccasins to wear when I do yard work.

How is going one day without shoes going to put shoes on a poor person? A TV station here often has clothing drives for the poor, but the items collected end up at the flea market within days of their big televised give away.

davidbetterman's avatar

@sevenfourteen There is only one way to help them, indeed to help us all. That is to leave things alone and let people die off until the human population is once again in balance and harmony with the earth. That is, the earth can only support so many billions of people, and when you add to many, then the resources become scarce. When enough people die off, the resources and people once again balance out. It is harsh, but we allowed it to happen in the first place.

deni's avatar

@davidbetterman Ishmael! It sounds harsh but its true…we’re just making it worse.

davidbetterman's avatar

Daniel Quinn…@deni Yes, it is harsh. But allowing things to get this out of control was just incredibly stupid.

Back in the 60s there was this book called the Population Bomb…

The Population Bomb was a best-selling book written by Paul R. Ehrlich in 1968. It warned of the mass starvation of humans in 1970s and 1980s due to overpopulation and advocated immediate action to limit population growth.”

We were warned.

Funny how people just refuse to pay attention when it means they might have to quit procreating…

sevenfourteen's avatar

@davidbetterman this is going off topic but why not start population control by getting rid of criminals and people deemed unfit for society instead of the innocent children? Who will be of more use in society?

davidbetterman's avatar

@sevenfourteen Who is in charge in deeming who is unfit?

BoBo1946's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille you can step on my shoes anytime sport!
