Tattooed jellies: Do you find that people feel as if they can just come right up to and touch you when looking at your tattoo?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) April 8th, 2010

For the most part, my tattoo is not visible. However, when I wear a shorter shirt and no sweatshirt, my shirt sometimes get lifted a little and my tattoo is slightly visible it’s located on my stomach. I don’t always realize this and sometimes, people reach out and lift up my shirt to see it. Thankfully, this has never happened with a complete stranger before, but it often happens with people I’ve just met. It’s usually very startling and a bit intrusive. Does this kind of thing happen to you tattooed jellies?

I have a giant backpiece and the top of it is visible with most shirts – I have had some people feel it’s okay for them to pull down my shirt in the back in order to see better – don’t worry, I didn’t break their arm. Ordinarily, those in control of themselves ask if they can see the rest of it and I make a judgment on whether or not to show them – many jerk offs on the street scream to see it or ask if it goes all the way down – and I say ‘Yes, but you won’t be’.

I am not tattooed, but I was once pregnant.

It is rude and aggravating for anyone to touch me when not specifically invited to do so. I recommend availing oneself of a whiffle-ball bat with which to beat these intruders. ^_^

I am not tattooed, rather have hair long enough to reach to the lower part of my butt.

People seem to think that I grew it that long for their pleasure of touching it without asking first.. I am male so the length of my hair is very unusual.

I have heard the same said by friends of mine who are tattooed. It is as if some people think that they got the tattoos just to give people permission to touch them unasked.

None of my tattoos are very visible. You can see the one on my thigh if I wear really short shorts or a bathing suit. No one touches me, but because the writing is in Italian, people always ask me what it means.
If people felt the need to touch me and move my clothing to see a tattoo I would be irritated. I don’t think this has happened though.

@Arisztid

Did I tell you I finally cut my hair? It’s so nice not having to hear “ZOMG, your hair is soooooooo long! Isn’t it hot? How long did it take to grow it? OMG I could never do that it would drive me crazy…..”

I have two tattoos on my arms that do get questions a lot (one’s a set of wind turbines the other is “the music” just written out), and depending on where I’m at is how people approach me.

When I visit Arkansas, I often get random people touching my arm, “Oh wow, what is this? Did it hurt?” etc etc… but they are very touchy.

But when I’m back home in California, people are way WAY less touchy. They also don’t ask nearly as often as Arkansans do. I mostly get glares and mean looks.

Tells you a lot about those states.

I have no problem with that. Touch away.

People ask me several times a year week if they can touch my torso, my shoulders, my arms and/or my face.
Most of them ask it nicely and usually i let them do their thing.
I don’t have tattoo’s by the way.

@Seek_Kolinahr I am fond enough of mine that I am willing to put up with such things as well as still occasionally sitting on it and giving myself whiplash. I would not mind doing without those things but, since I am already getting “OMG your eyes, where did you get your contacts?” Me: “no, they are factory installed.” Them: “nooooooo… nobody has eyes that color” ... and it goes on.

chyna's avatar

If this is the norm, then I’m needing some tattoo’s. Grope away.

Yea! ;-)

I’m with @Arisztid on this one—it’s not a tattoo but my hair. It’s long-ish and reddish and people tend to think that gives them permission to touch. For the most part, I don’t really mind anymore. I’m just used to it.

Touch my tattoo? They’re lucky if they even get to see it.

More people want to touch my hair.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

No not at all. My tattoo is small and always covered. It’s located on my hip area so I’d be pretty weirded out if someone started stroking my tat!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

Tattoo or not, some people are touchy -feely and think they can put their hands on you.I don’t like to be touched by strangers and my quick reaction usually gets the point across.

CMaz's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille – Can I touch you?

@ChazMaz Go ahead and try it. She’ll kick you in the junk with her shoeboxed foot.

CMaz's avatar

Yikes, I keep my junk in the garage.

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to why people might feel free to just lift your shirt to see the rest of the tattoo? I mean, do guys come up and pull down your bra to get a look at your breast? Or other parts of your clothing to see other parts of your body?

This kind of creeps me out. It seems so disrespectful. Are they disrespectful, or just maladroit?

Almost all of my tattoos are visible and I never have random people come up touching me. Lots of people ask questions or ask to see them though. I do have a large beard these days. Maybe that keeps them away?

@fyoz, I find it odd as I live in Arkansas but never get gropped. Which area do you vist?

hearkat's avatar

Great question! I often feel odd just looking at a stranger’s tattoos, trying to figure out what they are… but I figure they got them in a visible location to be seen. I’ve never asked a random stranger about them, and certainly would never touch someone I don’t know!!

chyna's avatar

@Randy If I was in Arkansas, I would grope you.

KatawaGrey's avatar

@wundayatta: It usually does creep me out. Every once in a while, someone will put their hand on the top of my belt or my pants my tattoo is partially obscured by my pants and when that happens, I give them a very loud, very high-pitched “excuse me!”

chyna's avatar

@KatawaGrey I can’t believe people are that rude! Good thing you don’t have one on your breast or they would be groping your boobies.

casheroo's avatar

When I had my lip ring in, I actually had a stranger touch it. I was disgusted and was confused as to why he would do such a thing.
I have had people hold my wrists, to see my wrist tattoos, but they don’t touch my tattoos.

sarahjane90's avatar

I have a large tattoo on my thigh and one from my ribs to my hip bone, a lot of people want to see the whole thing, but no, I have not encountered too many people trying to touch them, although depending on who it was I wouldn’t really mind!

Ron_C's avatar

I think tattoos are defacing. Why would I want to touch them? It is like walking down the street with an open wound, I wouldn’t touch that either.

Randy's avatar

@Ron C they’re only open wounds for about two weeks… The same as any other open wound. After that they become healed works of art on your skin.

Ron_C's avatar

@Randy not for me.

Grisaille's avatar

My tattoos are all in places that are normally covered by clothing. Occasionally, I’ll get hot in the summer and unbutton the top two buttons of my shirt, which often reveals part of the tattoo on my chest.

The answer is yes. It happens. And it’s weird.
