My dog is being sick / diarrhoea. Any advice please?

Asked by partyparty (9162points) April 9th, 2010

My dog is being sick and has diarrhoea. This started just over twelve hours ago.

I have an appointment with the vet later today, but wondered if I should give her something myself to stop the vomiting/diarrhoea?

Should I give her some food or starve her until she has seen the vet?

Is there anything I could give her myself without having to see the vet?

I also have another dog. They have both been fed the same food, and the other dog is OK.

The only thing I’d advise is to make sure he/she has plenty of water available as after 12hrs it’s gonna be quite dehydrated. Leave the rest to the vet.

Just offer her food and water. Animals seem to know what’s best for them. See the vet when you can.

At first I thought this was a spelling fail, turns out you can spell it either way.

Offer water and keep her comfortable until she gets to the vet. If you have anyother questions, call the vet and ask. There should be a 24 hour line if you need it.

@JeffVader Many thanks for your answer. She is drinking and hasn’t been sick for a couple of hours.
@stranger_in_a_strange_land Many thanks. Do you think it is OK to offer her food?
@YARNLADY Yes, many thanks. We so worry about our pets don’t we?
@XOIIO Which word?

@partyparty I hope she’s over the worst of it!

@partyparty I think the worst it could do is go rapidly through her digestive tract. She’ll still get some nutrition from it. If she’s vomiting, she probably won’t want to eat, but at least offer it.

@JeffVader Thanks, for your concern. So kind of you
@stranger_in_a_strange_land The odd thing is she WANTS to eat. She is sitting waiting for her morning treat, but I haven’t given her anything yet. (Had to sneakily give the other dog her treat).

@partyparty Diarrheo, I googled it, and it brought up the same results, with no correction.

Rice can help.

partyparty's avatar

@dpworkin Ah many thanks for that. I thought about rice, but wasn’t sure if it would help. I’m going to make some for her right now. Thanks again

My ex’s dog had IBS. The vet may give you some charcoal tablets and a prescription for… argh, it’s slipping my mind. The other thing we always had to do was give her rice to help bind her up and make sure she drank enough fluids to replenish what she lost. I sometimes had to bribe her chicken broth when she wouldn’t drink water.

I’ve used pepto-bismol, but you’d have to ask your vet about the right dosage for your dog. Hope he/she is better soon!

@MissAnthrope Charcoal tablets, that sounds good. She is on rice now, but not really interested in food. Thanks anyway for your reply
@netgrrl Many thanks for your answer and good wishes
