Does anyone have experience with Boost or MetroPCS or StraightTalk?

Asked by BraveWarrior (1330points) April 9th, 2010

I’m considering changing to one of the monthly inclusive unlimited voice/text plans. Anyone have experience with Boost Mobile (Sprint), MetroPCS, or Straight Talk (TracFone)? Specifically, I’m looking for feedback on reliability (dropped calls), service area coverage (“Can you hear me now?”), ability to port over a current cell phone number from another provider, and customer service. I would need reliable coverage in NY, NJ, CT, PA, & NC. Thank you!

@BraveWarrior

Why not Verizon Wireless?

Boost, MetroPCS, and Straight Talk are all unlimited voice, unlimited text, for $40/mo, $45/mo, or $50/mo inclusive of all taxes/fees, etc. I’m not aware of Verizon having a similar plan.

@BraveWarrior

Better network, fewer drops and yes MORE expensive.

Sprint for under $50/ month.

@Tropical_Willie Thank you, but I am specifically looking for experiences with Boost, MetroPCS, and/or Straight Talk’s all inclusive unlimited plans.

I had Metro for a while. My call quality was almost entirely dependent on the phone I had (so it was always good); my service only really got interrupted when there was a lightning storm when I was living in Tampa, FL; I was never dropped once, ever; coverage is great in the cities that host them, but when you reach the edge of that service map on the site, you fall off the edge of the earth. I’ve never had to change or port numbers with Metro, but I believe it’s done a lot with not too much hassle. There’s a number of ways to pay your bill each month. The only downside to Metro is their customer service is a bunch of robots, including some of the people. But it’s worth it in my opinion.

@Fenris Thank you. I took a look at their service coverage map on their website, and I am concerned about their lack of coverage in parts of NY, NJ, CT, and PA. They may be a better option for me if they expand their coverage in the Northeast. Thanks again!

FYI, I’ve had Boost Mobile for several months (the $50 Unlimited voice/text/web/411) for since May ‘10 (4 months today :) and I’m very happy with it. The coverage is good in my part of NY & when I took a trip to Horsham/Valley Forge PA, the coverage was great through NJ & PA. The few times I had to call customer service (to set up the service, to reset my phone when it froze, & 1 time when it was having trouble accessing my email) the CS reps were polite, professional, friendly, pleasant, (easy to understand) and able to resolve the issues quickly.

Straight talk has been a pleasant surprise. Got tired of 450 minutes, extra for 250 texts and no data plan included unless you paid extra at Verizon. Everyone said the cdma phones at straight talk used the verizon network but with so much more minutes, text and data for the money.

Now that i have straight talk, I love my new phone and I’ll never use the 700 minutes/700 texts/30MB of data that I get for $30 a month. I was worried about living out here in the sticks in NC but it really does use the verizon network which has pretty good coverage. I love being able to use my cell phone to do mobile banking. At first I thought it wouldn’t work since straight talk wasn’t one of the service provider options when i was setting up the mobile banking thing. i clicked the verizon selection and sure enough, everything works.

Only regret is that I didn’t switch sooner. I’ve had one dropped call in the few weeks that I’ve had straight talk but it was much worse with vz. reception is so much better now so maybe it was time for a new phone (the local verizon store tested my phone and said it was fine). I did notice that straight talk doesn’t offer smart phone, i-phone, etc. options but if you’re can find a phone you like on their website, i say give it a try. no contract! that’s the best part i think after being imprisoned by that at Verizon.

Read tons of reviews and many complained about the customer service. Straight talk must have been listening, I have not been put on hold, they understand English, and are able to do what I ask for (I called to get rid of that message that tells you how many minutes you have before connecting each and every dialed phone call).

sorry, its 1000 minutes/1000 texts/30Mb for $30. now I’ll really never go over my limits.
