Depending on which country you were born in, would anytime in history have suited or brought the best out in you other than now for whatever reasons?

I think that I would like to have lived during World War II, because I could have made a contribution to the war effort.

davidbetterman's avatar

The wild west…‘cause I have a very fast quickdraw.

I often have the fantasy of going back in time to pre-Norman invasion Ireland. When I think critically about it, I probably wouldn’t survive (and I would miss toilet paper desperately). But the very loose and wild social structures and the Celtic ornamentation and bardic tradition are very attractive to me.

I’d rather live sometime in the future. History is filled with too much ignorance, even the present is. Some of us are too logical to live in this time period lol. But I think I would pick the civil rights era so I could march with MLK lol. That was a great turning point and I wish I could have been there and felt the triumph of finally receiving equal rights. I hope gay people feel the same feeling soon.

CaptainHarley's avatar

The wild, wild West, no contest! : D

stump's avatar

@Blackberry I am afraid the future will have a lot of ignorance in it, too. I hope I am wrong.

rahm_sahriv's avatar

1800s. As a man, not a woman. I would not be a woman any earlier in history than I already am.

Blackberry's avatar

@stump I know you are right, I’m just fantasizing is all.

I should have been born in 1868 and died in 1959.

That way I would have been able to witness most of the events in history that interest me the most.

The end of the Victorian Era, Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency, the 20’s U.S., both World Wars, and the beginning of the Cold War.

Oh, and the golden age of military surplus sales

My favorite movie of all time is Henry and June.

Although it would’ve been fun to live in the 1880s or 1920s or something and I am very interested in those time-periods, I don’t think being gay in any other time-period other than now would’ve been so great.

Now +2000 years. Because I hope first of all that we will have survived, but also achieved a much more enjoyable societal, technological and cultural stage. Earthling culture represents me more than any one nation. Where you are born and with what genes is an ‘accident’.

I know I answered my own question here, but making a point :)

@davidbetterman

Rules of The Fluther Gang:

1. Take no prisoners, they cost too much to feed.
2. Bathe at least once every two weeks whether you need to or not.
3. Horses come first. First you feed your horse, then YOU get to eat.
4. The only good lawman is one we can bribe.
5. We rob banks ‘cause that’s where the money is!
6. We don’t shoot no one unless they gets in our way or aggravates us, like staring at us too long.
7. All loot is shared equally ( unless betterman is as fast as he says, then he gets TWO shares! )
8. For safety’s sake, we all sleep in one bedroll. ( Mwahahahaha! : D )
9. We vote on where to go and what to rob.
10. Anybody messes with one of us, messes with ALL of us! : D

I’m trying hard enough to get out of the country as it is today. Frack any earlier time. I have no desire to see “No Irish Need Apply” signs, or worry about the reasons the 2nd amendment was actually written.

I would like to have grown up 1940s Australia. Witness WWII from a relatively safe distance, but more importantly experience the growth that followed the end of the war. Music and fashion-wise, I would have fitted right in. Of course, I would need to make up a very good story about my heritage, and a lack of internet might kill me, but surely it would be worth the experience.

boffin's avatar

The mid to late 30’s I would have loved to fly and crew with Dr. Hugo Eckener’s Graf Zeppelin.
