Why do most trolls have poor grammer and spelling? Is it on purpose?

Asked by Lightning (378points) April 9th, 2010

A lot of trolls have awful grammar AND spelling. Why is that? Most trolls want to upset people, and make fools of them, for their own gratification. But they end up being the laughing stock of the forum.

Why do you think trolls have awful grammar when it severely hinders their objectives?

A nice mixture of anxiety and apathy.

Many people here do not have English as thier primary language. That affects typing. Some people here have brain damage. That affects typing. Some people here have Multiple Sclerosis. That affects typing. 98% of people here do not have English degrees. That affects typing.

Here’s a good rule of thumb. If you can understand what they are saying, answer it. If you cannot understand what they are saying, move on.

@phillis Yes but why do trolls have poor grammar? Even born American ones?

@Lightning See above. You have to eliminate prejudice before making any assumptions.

It’s annoying, and they do all that they can to be a bother.

Because they probably dont take the time to check and edit their answers, seeing as they don’t really care about the quality of what they are saying, just the reaction it will get.

Also, I would assume most trolls are probably under the age of 16….and have no spelling and punctuation skill as they have grown up with spell and grammar checkers.

trolls dont go to school

Because they’re stupid.

Not everyone who has bad grammar and spelling is stupid, but if you are stupid, you’re more likely to have bad grammar and spelling and I think it’s pretty well understood that trolls are stupid.

It’s their usual aftermath caused by carelessness and the dark cloud of hatred that follows them wherever they may go to call down further imprecations on forum users…

Actually I believe the biggest “troll” I have met on here is an erudite, well -read, extremely intelligent person with a lot of life experience. He simply is here to prove he is right about everything and he is God. He wipes his ass with everyone “beneath” him. I could care less about stupid people. Stupid people don’t do a fraction of the damage of an evil yet intelligent sociopath. He seems to have toned down his razor sharp disemboweling of anyone he finds beneath himself. Perhaps the mods have hit him with a few tranquilizer darts.

Seriously. If someone comes on here calling you a “pooopy face” are you going to start crying or laughing? There has to be some power to their verbage or it is entirely ineffective.

Low IQ’s ?

It seems fairly obvious to me. Finding enjoyment and/or stimulation from harassing people often denotes a lack of empathy, which can result from lack of intelligence.

I believe you spelled grammar wrong in the question…

Side affect from sporadic trolling days.

I think they do it deliberately because they know it annoys everyone else.

you are all talkin about internet trolls.

But real life bridge trolls also oftentimes have poor grammar and spelling (to compliment their boozin and smokin).

And yes there really are bridge trolls in America. I’ve met at least 500 of ‘em by now. They stand on, or under bridges, boozin and smokin

Underdeveloped brains.

I’m not sure whether the correlation is really true. Any studies on this?
