I need advice about a great place to stay in Kona, Hawaii.

Asked by davidk (1432points) April 11th, 2010

Although I am an experienced traveler, I have never been to Hawaii before.
After researching the Hawaiian Islands, I’ve concluded that it would be better to stay on the big island and do side trips to explore the other islands.

I have all the “what to do’s” lined up, but I need a solid recommendation for where to stay. I’m looking for non-touristy, high end lodging.

I do have a list of candidates for lodging, so I’m looking for anecdotal evidence and personal experience.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Hawaii a few times and have tried many different hotels in different cities. Although I usually will spend more time in Oahu or Maui than on the big Island.. Kona still holds some of my best Hawaiian memories. I strongly recommend (from personal experience) the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Hope this helps.

The Kona Sugar Shack was quaint. We enjoyed it very much.

If you’re looking for high-end and truly unique, the Kona Village Resort can’t be beat. Bungalows. Scuba and snorkeling. Fine dining. Luau at its best. (link)

Aloha and enjoy.

I have no idea why you think it is better to stay on the big island and do side trips to the other islands…....direct flights between big island and some of the other islands are not available. The only place in Kona I’ve stayed at is the Hilton Waikoloa and it is one of those mega resorts. It was nice…just like any other mega resort anywhere in the world.

I have interisland flights all worked out and will be using helicopter tours as well. I don’t think it is better to stay on the big island, it’s just my personal preference.

Wow…Kona Village Resort.
@Silhouette
The Surgar Shack looks great too!

Maybe I’ll stay for two weeks and do both!
