What would your all time classic British movie collection contain & who gave the finest performances?

Asked by ucme (50047points) April 12th, 2010

British cinema, much maligned in recent times. There was a time when we could be relied upon for iconic classics, most of which hollywood later ruined with vastly inferior remakes. What would you place on or near the top of your favourite British movies list?

Most of the British films I have seen and what particularly stands out at the moment are the Bond films, especially those of Sean Connery as 007. . .

@janbb There certainly are, although they were well before my time I love the Ealing comedies in particular. The Ladykillers & The Lavender Hill Mob being two classic examples…...why am I telling you this? They weren’t in your list…oh well there you go.

janbb's avatar

@ucme I thought of including them but ran out of steam; they definitely make the cut!

Lawrence Of Arabia and Peter O’Toole.

Also a big big fan of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Python was kind of a gimme.

Michael Palin on his own has done some really nice work. After all, he was The Sun in Wind of the Willows. Of course.

A Private Function and The Missionary are two small, but brilliant films he starred in.

I think Truly Madly Deeply has to be up there. Alan Rickman is the bomb.

Secrets & Lies
Trainspotting
Shallow Grave
Naked
Life Is Sweet
The Crying Game
The Elephant Man
Gregory’s Girl
Educating Rita

I mean, dude, c’mon. I can’t list them all. I can’t. There’s too many. And tell someone to put David Tennant as a leading man in a film, stat. It’s time he moved up to Premiere League.

Oh, and I recently saw Damian Lewis in the 2003 series The Forsyte Saga. He’s fantastic! His portrayal of Soames Forsyte was pitch perfect, my god. There’s too many great actors in the UK as well; Brenda Blethyn, Christopher Eccleston, Sophie Okonedo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ewan McGregor, and on and on and on…
