Does anyone have any experience with "conscious discipline"?

Asked by knitfroggy (8982points) April 12th, 2010

My 7 year old son has ADHD. He takes medication to help with this. He does well at school, is very obedient, does well, reads 4th grade level books in the 1st grade, etc.

The problem is at home. He has what we call “meltdowns”. He will rage and scream-generally make himself and everyone else miserable. Last week he had a four hour rage because I wouldn’t buy him a new video game. He had been in therapy, but it basically consisted of the therapist chewing his ass for 50 minutes once a month. We quit him.

We met with a new therapist today. She spoke about my son having trouble with “transitioning” in situations and that we needed to maybe look into “conscious discipline”. I think this new therapist is going to help us, and I’m really excited about it. She is going to see him weekly and try some different tactics. Luckily there is a seminar Thursday night that we are thinking of attending on conscious discipline. Has anyone heard of conscious discipline or used it? I’m not at all opposed to it, I will try anything at this point to make my son’s life easier to live.

Just a warning, research the meds they want you to give your son THROUGHLY before you give them to him. So many just take the pills a doctor orders without second thoughts. Yes, a doctor should be listened to, but never blindly.

Sorry, you didn’t even mention meds, except briefly and I went on a rant, but seriously, do the research on those meds. Sometimes their benefits do out weigh the risks, but not always.

As far as conscious discipline here is some information in video format: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4482433245240650484#

@rahm_sahriv We’ve tried him on several meds and we’ve even tried school with no meds. He didn’t do well. At all. His pediatrician medicates him for his ADHD. He is a wonderful doctor and has said if my son needs any mood stabilizer meds he wouldn’t be able to prescribe them because it’s not his area of expertise. The Mental Health Center he is going to has people that only prescribe, so I will do a lot of question asking and reading before I let them give him any more meds. It already breaks my heart he has to take meds every morning to function properly at school.
