Why do Talkative people assume everyone can benefit from going back to school?

Asked by joscketSeper (323points) April 12th, 2010

Everyone always says “Go back to school so you can get a better job”. I have a temp job now, but it may end. So i have to start looking for something else.

I HAVE experience going to University. I graduated by a miracle, you could say, because actually I struggled to death. I have trouble with speaking and understanding when people speak fast or use a lot of vocab.

POINT IS,, College/adult ed/whatever, is made by outgoing/talkative type people FOR outgoing/talkative people. They’re not gonna slow down and help you just cause you have a slow brain. for that you would have to get private tutors or something but only the rich people do that.

Aside from learning disabilities and speech impediments, I have no social skills, i’m antisocial and have social phobia but college staff expects students to be the same as the majority( confident, talkative).

A confident outgoing Medical Records/Medical whatever/Computer graphics/design etc teacher is not going to slow down just for a person like me. And yet that person(like me) will just struggle to catch up and learn half-ass….and fail the classes( like i did in University (computer science) ) . It took me like a year, way after i left that school, learning the same stuff on my own, to finally understand it but i did.

That university goes by 3 month quarters. Sooo fast, and so much to learn. I have a very slow mind, how can you expect me to learn that fast?

So, is there something I can learn on my own that will be useful for getting a job and that companies will recognize even if i didn’t study it in a school? For me, learning by myself is better. Schools are not for me.
I’m in my early 30’s but i have some mental/development/speech(i don’t know what to call it) problem so I’m very very different from other 30 year olds.

You’ve answered a lot of your own questions – traditional schooling isn’t for everyone and if you are interested in it, you have to seek help if that’s what you need to ‘catch up’ – like tutors – each university has free tutors as well and I also want to mention that a lot of professors are aware of everyone’s different learning styles and especially if you give ‘em a heads up about some of your difficulties, most will work with you to help you grasp the material. I don’t think being talkative has much to do with doing well in school, btw.

You don’t really need us here, do you?

So, you don’t feel you can benefit from going back to school because of your self-perceived limitations. As long as you believe you can’t, then you can’t. So don’t! Do something else.

Don’t give up on higher education so fast. They can make accommodations for people with learning disabilities. I think they may even have to make it possible for you to work towards a degree. Anyway, I know at a University near where I live they do make such accommodations.

People tell you to get more education because education is highly correlated with income. The more education you have, the higher your income will be.

You may benefit from finding a disabilities rights advocate. They can help you navigate the system and to set you up so you can be successful in school. You probably know such people already, but if you don’t, I’m sure you can find local agencies to help you by Googling it.

Do not worry about not being the same as others. What other people see as your disabilities are advantages for some jobs. All you have to do is figure where your way of being gives you an advantage. Then it becomes a strength, not a disability.

I am quite serious about this. I don’t believe we have the genes we have by bad luck. I think the way we are when we are different is an adaptation for special conditions. Like people with ADD might be good scouts because their attention is always moving from one thing to another. Or a bipolar person might be a good manager, because they can see the overall picture more quickly than others.

I don’t know what you are good at because I don’t know you, nor what your situation is. But I’m sure you can figure out what your abilities make you good at, and learn to exploit that.

Also, there are introverts everywhere… even college campuses. I don’t think anyone will care if you aren’t the outgoing/talkative type.

“Talkative people”? Yay generalizations.

Because it’s the future trend. Simple manual labor as well as simple brain work is done by machines and computers. It has nothing to do with talkative people, but with people who understand trends and the future.
