What would be a good explanation for this site about The Beatles?

Asked by El_Perseguidor (410points) April 13th, 2010

A friend of mine sent me this link:

First, I do not believe the story, but I have to say that somebody worked a lot on these Beatles songs…
science fiction or not, the songs are pretty good if you like The Beatles. You can download the “new” album Everyday Chemistry for free…

I don’t know, but maybe this should be on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory. Sounds like something he would deal with. Interesting though, thanks for giving me the site. I enjoy stuff about conspiracy theories, aliens, parallel dimensions and the like :)

Ah, I almost forgot about this. Of course, the story is BS. The songs are good mixes, however. They feature not only Beatles songs, but also songs by the Beatles’ individual solo projects (such as Paul McCartney & Wings, etc.)

This is kinda dumb, imho.
The songs I listened to seemed like good remixes and mashups, and the person behind them, James Richards, created a silly fantastical BS story to promote his product.

A good explanation is really simple:

It’s a lie. One of three possible scenarios:

One – as @jfos pointed out, maybe it is exactly that, rare Beatles recordings and solo Beatle recordings mixed very well to make it seem like a new Beatles project.

Two – if this is NOT the Beatles (I’m downloading now just out of curiousity, which is exactly what “James Richards” wants), or even if it is, this is some sort of viral marketing, someone has created something, whether it be out of whole cloth in the style of the Beatles, or by re-mixing Beatles music, he now has a product he wants to make money from.

Three – Could just be a crazy person.

I’m guessing the truth lies somewhere between one and two.

@dalepetrie It is without a doubt a mix of riffs and beats and singing from Beatles songs. The certain parts are isolated from their original songs and then used as parts to make new songs by this guy.

I listened to it a while back… I remember most clearly a mashup of “Fab” by George Harrison and “Band on the Run” by Paul McCartney & Wings.

The chorus of “Fab”: ’Long time ago when we was fab’ is mixed with the chorus of “Band on the Run” so that it sounds like:
Long time ago when we was band on the run’.

Having listened to two tracks from this now, it’s clearly nothing more than a mash up of Beatles music and solo Beatle tracks. Anyone who’s at all familiar with the Beatles would know that.

Now one could say that it’s plausible, if you believe in say the Multiverse theory that there is a world where the Beatles never broke up, far less likely would be anyone being able to bring back a tape, much less one that would work in our tape players. But clearly, there is a big gaping problem with this idea that comes off the second you put the first song on.

The Beatles were NOT self referential. Yes, let’s say they never broke up, you very well would have new Beatles songs that incorporated what would have become solo Beatle tracks in some combination, but it would NOT include that much of their previous output. The thing that makes the Beatles the most influential band in the entire history of rock and roll, and possibly even the entire history of music is that they were always original, they were always doing something new. The closest they came to rehashing anything was in the lyrics to Glass Onion where they say, “I’ve told you about….”

@jfos – you are right, if I’d just waited for the download to complete, it would have been clear that you nailed it.

Basically what this is, is someone trying to be the next Danger Mouse. In case you don’t know who Danger Mouse is, he is half of the duo Gnarls Barkley, who had a HUGE hit a few years back with “Crazy”. Prior to this, he had produced a number of albums and worked with some of the biggest stars in contemporary music. But how he became famous was by remixing the Beatles. He was just a college student with aspirations to be a DJ, so he mashed up the Beatles’ White Album with Jay-Z’s Black Album and put it out on the web as the Grey Album under the name Danger Mouse. Though the Beatles tried to sue to block distribution, and he never actually sold the music, just gave it away on the internet, his skills attracted enough attention that he’s now a star in his own right and a highly sought after producer. James Richards is someone who thinks he could be the next Danger Mouse, simple as that.

@dalepetrie – You know Danger Mouse is working with James Mercer from The Shins. They’re calling themselves Broken Bells.

Likeradar's avatar

@aprilsimnel from what I’ve heard from them, they’re amazing.

@aprilsimnel – I didn’t know that, I’ll have to check that out. Thanks
