What’re some practical bits of wisdom you’ve picked up over the years?

Asked by IBERnineD (7324points) April 15th, 2010

I was taking a shower today and I looked at my shower curtain. It didn’t look particularity dirty, and I remembered that my ex boyfriend told me after a shower it’s good to make sure the shower curtain is open, because it is less likely to grow mold.

What is a tip or piece of advice that you can share, that will fix or make something better for your fellow flutherites? Do you have any expertise?

Mine would have to be, I always loose my bobby pins. I use miniature terracotta pots, the really small ones, to keep my loose bobby pins in one place. You can also put any ponytail holders around the base.

During the holidays, when you buy those large boxes/bags of citrus fruit, take the peels and toss them into a pot of water on the stove. Add some cloves and set to boil. It fills the entire house with a lovely spicy smell. I keep the pot of water at the ready and just drop the orange peels into it.

A phone charger still uses electricity even if there is no phone on it and it is plugged in?

It is OK to walk away from a fight or argument with a dumb person. I know it’s hard to refrain from exposing their idiocy, but it’s always better to be the bigger person.

Use binder clips to organize cables you frequently plug and unplug.

@gemiwing that’s sound wonderful!!!

@IBERnineD Oh it is! I sometimes add peppermint candies to the water too to add a bit of minty hint to the air. It’s wonderful and basically made of things that would be thrown away. In the summer I do just the orange peels – maybe a lemon peel- alone and it smells very fresh.

After working in the kitchen with smelly odors like garlic and or onions and such, wash your hands with warm soapy water and then rub them on a silver spoon. It will absorb the odors. Also, After boiling pasta or potatoes, cool the water and use it to water your house plants. The water contains nutrients that your plants will love.

If your dog has fleas, chop 5–6 lemons in tiny circular pieces and throw them in a pot of water on the stove. Allow the water to boil until about half of it is gone. Remove the lemons. Allow the water to cool. Then dip your dog in the lemon juice. Taadaa! Fleas no mo! Then go buy some Frontline.
^Compliments of Phillis.

Pam cooking spray is also rather wonderful. It dries finger nail polish, helps with sticking bicycle chains and removes paint and grease from your hands.

And give yourself an enema before trying anal. You’ll thank me later.

@Vunessuh You know I was really enjoying that water you made me spit out.

WD-40 is great for getting knots and burrs out of a horses mane and tail.
Spray it on the knot and comb it out like you normally would. If the knot is on the forelock, you can spray it on the comb instead of the hair.
In case, you know… you’re brushing a horse anytime soon.

1. Life is not fair. It’s not designed to be fair. If you want “fair,” you have to make it for yourself.

2. If you want to be liked, if you want to attract the opposite sex, make yourself into the best “you” you can be. People who like that “you” will be attracted to you, and those relationships will outlast any other sort.

3. Never give up. Never surrender. Never say “die.” And take no prisoners.

4. Do you have food to eat, clothes to wear, a roof over your head, some way to occupy your mind, and at least one other human being who loves you? Then you are indeed a wealthy human being!

5. Learn to focus with great intensity over extended periods of time, and you will succeed.

6. Be kind! It costs you nothing. Remember that we are all ‘soldiers of life,’ and that everyone you meet is fighting some sort of battle.

7. Most rules are made by others who seek to control our behavior in some way. Ipso facto, freedom dictates that most rules are made to be broken.

8. The greatest ‘sin’ is in dying without ever having truly lived.

9. Youth passes, and beauty fades, but a loving heart lives forever.

10. Live today so you have as few regrets tomorrow as possible. And if you find someone along the broken roads, consider yourself among the most fortunate of humans.

I have a plastic “bin” in my trunk when I go grocery shopping to keep items that roll from rolling, or items that need to be protected from being bruised.

Do what you want to do while you can do it.

Keep your nails painted if you wanted them to grow.

When you are in a lecture watch the face/mouth of the person speaking, stay focused on them, and you will remember and learn more.

SPF protection means you are not getting Vitamin D. Of the women I know who have been tested, I only one who is not vitamin D deficient.

If you cut your hand put it above your heart to help slow the bleeding and apply pressure.

@JLeslie My sister just got diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency! And they told her about the SPF thing!
@slick44 Why garlic?

Do what makes you happy.

No matter how sad or angry you are, look in the mirror and give yourself a genuine smile and laugh for at least 1 full minute, you’ll be surprised at how hard it is to stay so upset.

Vinegar and baking soda make a great cleaner for smelly garbage disposals.

2 parts cream of tartar 1 part baking soda = baking powder.

Never lose your sense of wonder.

You don’t need a double broiler to properly melt chocolate, just a little patience.

Nothing is more important that where you are, who you’re with, and what you’re doing at any particular moment.

You can’t argue with the little things.

Never let the little things keep you from what you want.

Many of life’s most important lessons are contradictory, just learn to go with it.

Keep a sponge and your preferred tub cleaning soap near you while showering so you can also do some quick cleaning while you’re in there. When you clean your bathroom later on in the week, it will take much lesser time since there won’t be any soap scum + dirt build up.

Sea salt is great for your skin! Have you ever noticed when you go to the beach your skin clears up? It’s because sea salt helps draw toxins out of the skin. That’s why so many products boast having dead sea salt as their main ingredient.
You can always make your own scrub with large grain (for your body) or fine grain (for your face) sea salt and an oil (olive oil, almond oil etc)

Another good way to keep track of bobbypins:
Buy a big magnet and stick it to something like your fridge, then stick the bobbypins to your magnet. BAM! They’re always there waiting for you.

Start saving as soon as you can and put away as much as you can in savings.

Time helps you get over most pain. No matter how often you’ve been hurt by love, love again. Love more.

Trust, but verify. That is, assume people are trustworthy, but don’t trust them with you bank account right away. Build trust slowly, so you can make sure they are trustworthy people.

Research everything. Know as much as you can before you make a decision. But don’t let the research go on forever. Make the decision, even if you don’t know all that you wish you would know.

Love—there’s nothing more important in the world. You are blessed with love. Your job is to go make more of it.

Self-esteem is overrated.

Find ways to get out of your head and do them as often as possible. Living in your head causes needless pain.

There is something to love in everyone, even if it only that they are a fellow human. Look for it and build a relationship on it. Be kind. Always be kind, if you can. And care. People will feel these things, and will respond. It works whether or not you love yourself. In general it is usually easier to love someone else than it is to love yourself.

When you are in pain, it is ok to ask for help. If someone tells you to fix it yourself, do not believe that you are wrong to ask for help. It is still ok. You just asked the wrong person.

I’m sure I could go on and on. But that’s enough on this question.

Oh yeah. One more. Do it! Then move on. Life is too short to constantly be questioning yourself.

Assume the worst, hope for the best.

No matter how hard you try, you will fail, but it’s the effort that makes all the difference.

Keep an extra coat and blanket, some beef jerky, and a big bottle of water in the car.

WD40 can help free up stuck lug nuts, keep a can with your spare.

Before your road trip, check your tires – spare included.

Never become so consumed with your goals that you forget to enjoy reaching them.

Make sure you know how deep the water is before you jump in.

You if you don’t try you’ll never fail, but likewise, you’ll never succeed.

If you don’t know, ask.

Coke actually can clean your car’s battery terminals and sometimes that’s all it needs.

Even if you don’t like it, you always have a choice.

Never stop dreaming.

If it bothers you that much, do something about it.

Learn to enjoy the moment even if it sucks, because it may never come again.

shego's avatar

Just because you fail, doesn’t mean that you should give up, it just means you what you need to fix in order to become successful.
Write your dreams down, a dream that’s not written down is harder to achieve.

The dog does not lie on the porch like Lassie, you will find it behind a tree having licked a chicken to death. Dead is dead.

Those really cute goats you have to have…well…it’s amazing how they decide that the roof of new car is the perfect mountain from which to survey their domain.

Or that geese delight in stripping the insulation off of any outdoor faucet or pipe?

Never under estimate the power of farm animals.

@IBERnineD You should get tested too. Every woman should in my opinion, unless you work outside and get tanned.

I dont no why garlic. they dont like it. or dont tolerate it for some reason.

@jonsblond
Personifying and qualifying karma creates karma as do all activities both sleeping and waking. Karma is created whether one is naughty or nice. Karma is not retribution, vengeance recompense or cause and effect. This is a relativist view of karma borrowed from Western thought and deist concepts. The only escape from karma is enlightenment.

The emptiness is neutral, beyond right and wrong, beyond reaction and attachment. And yet it requires the forum of the flesh to be what it is. Yin and yang. One.This is the great liberation from all duality and bondage, when being is neutral. The zen nothingness of self, permeating all existence, is the self which has evaporated and yet remains. It is only when you lose all definition of yourself that you are truly free.
