Have your ever bought an "As Seen On Tv" product and were pleased with it ?

Asked by Pretty_Lilly (4660points) April 25th, 2010

Whether from a regular commercial or an infomercial.
{ e.g. Magic Bullet,Nuwave Infrared Oven,Steam Mops,Mister Steamy Dryer Ball. etc..etc.. }
Is there a website which rates these product and tells the truth of their performance & durability ?
I have been wanting to buy a steam mop but I’m afraid I’ll end up paying $60 for an useless product !

Turbie Twist. Love it.

@Pretty_Lilly search for “steam mop” on Amazon.com, and you will find name-brand tools with warranties, etc.

@Pretty_Lilly My mother-in-law bought a steam mop at Wal-Mart. They told her she could return it if she didn’t like it, but she’s been very happy with it. I’ve borrowed it from her, and like it a lot as well. I might have to go out and pick one up for myself.

To answer the question, I’ve never bought something from an infomercial. I’m always skeptical of their claims and wouldn’t want to waste the money. Before you buy something like that, you should go online and look for user reviews, which will give you an idea of how well the product meets expectations.

My grandfather bought one of those Little Giant Ladders. He loved it enough to get a second one. He never had any trouble with it, even though this guy did.

I bought a non-tangle hose. It didn’t get snarled but it fell apart after one season.

Nope, I got a Magic Bullet for Christmas (I was a bit obsessed with the informercial) and it sucked.

It was only really useful for making smoothies and even then it wasn’t magical. Pretty much everything else it couldn’t chop worth a shit.

I bought quite a few——
—-Tobi Steam Ironing System——not bad, quick and relatively easy to use, but it works best on light cotton fabrics, not so much heavier material like wool pants.
——Jack LaLanne’s Juicer——okay, juices quick and easily, but it’s a mess to clean up with the left-over pulp! And contrary to what they tell you on t.v., it’s quite noisy!
——6 Second ABs exerciser——so-so, you can tone and strengthen your abdomen, but it won’t give you rock hard abs! All you will notice is a slightly toned , stronger abdomen.
——Back To Life back machine——so-so, the machine is low-key, slowly stretches your lower back. You feel a little loosening-up of the lower back, but you have to use it everyday and consistently, otherwise it does little help. Not a miracle cure as the informercial seems to attest!

I bought that “Smooth Away” thing, at WalMart.

It’s effectively sandpaper for your legs. I really liked how it worked, and the exfoliation was awesome… but the pads don’t last long, and they don’t sell refills. After about two uses, you have to buy a whole new kit. That means you spend about $70 a month to shave your legs. Not cool.

@keobooks My husband has two of those ladders for his painting business, and he loves them.

We were walking through Big Lots one day and there was this hard boiled egg peeler that said “As seen on TV!” It was $1 so we figured, if it didn’t work big whoop. The stupid thing actually worked and was a lot of fun to play with. We were boiling eggs just to pop them through it.

And my mom bought me a “slider” maker. It makes six small hamburgers, rather quickly. Works as advertised.

@mrentropy
but where do you get the tiny buns?

mrentropy's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr I got them at the local grocery store. There were a couple of different kinds, including sesame seed.

As a college student, the Pizazz kicks ass.

I had no idea the Pizazz had gone to college.

One thing and one thing only…THE GEORGE FOREMAN GRILL!!!! I have diabetes so I have to make my own food (because most stores, restaraunts, and fast food joints add too much sugar) to manage my blood sugar right. The only negative is the fact that I can only grill a specific amount of foods, i.e. chicken breast and burgers. I do my own marinades and sauces, but I would KILL for some ribs…

First, Popular Mechanics (being the engineers that they are) started testing and reporting on “as seen on tv” products a while back. You may be able to find some info there: link

Second, I’ve purchased the slap chop and the magic bullet and both worked just fine. My wife loves them. Hope this helps!!

We love our George Foreman grill (it was a gift).

And my husband makes some awesome smoothies with the Magic Bullet. And I’ve used it for soups as well.

Otherwise it has all sucked.
