Is it better for you to live in a cold or hot climate? And does your partner feel the same way?

Asked by Rangie (3664points) April 28th, 2010

I can’t handle hot climates. It give me a headache, the heat makes me irritable, I have no energy. But the cold, I can always get warm if I need to. It makes me feel invigorated and full of energy. Everything seems fresh.

I do way better in temperate climates. If I had my choice, it’d fall more on the cool side. I don’t handle heat very well, I get hyperthermia, I get nauseous, irritable, sweat a lot, and am generally very miserable. I would love to go to Thailand, but quite honestly, I don’t think I could ever do it because I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it due to the heat and humidity.

It’s interesting you ask this because I had a definite temperature conflict with one of my exes that I thought I would marry.. but I did truly wonder how it would work because she adored being out in the hot summers (while I hid inside in the a/c) and hated the cold with a passion, said it was physically painful (while I love it and like you, find it energizing). We always had arguments about where to set the thermostat, as well. So, I can see it being a point of contention in relationships if there is a difference like this.

I prefer it to be hot, he prefers it to be a bit cooler. It’s not about climate as to where to live, it’s about what people surround us and NYC can’t be beat.

@MissAnthrope I use to have to go to Florida to visit my mother in law. No matter what time of year it was, it was hot. I hated it, you could not get dry after a shower. My hair always fell flat with sweat, my clothes were always damp.
No when I lived up in the mountains, we got about 10 feet of snow every winter. I loved it. My husband would stoke up the fire and make the house hot. I would take a little run out on the deck barefoot, cool me right down. When I was out plowing snow, I would leave the window open all the way, unless snow was blowing into the truck.

Can’t stand the cold. I grew up in the desert of Nevada and now I live in California. So it’s all about the warm. I want warm sunny weather as much as possible. That’s why I’ve considered living in Spain or Portugal or something along those lines. My boyfriend and I are the same way; we’re fun-in-the-sun California boys; that’s just how it works. :)

Now, of course I want to visit the snow-covered mountains and I wouldn’t want it to be “hot” all year round or anything, but definitely a warmer climate is what I prefer. Las Vegas might be a bit on the extreme side, but a nice warm place like SoCal or the Mediterranean would be preferable.

It’s not hot or cold that we have issues with – it’s humidity and pollen.

When we were in Bonaire for our honeymoon – a place with very, very little humidity compared to our home state of Florida – he didn’t have a single asthma attack, didn’t need to use his nebulizer. I was able to wear my contacts all day without a single problem, even though I have Chronic Dry Eye and can’t bear to wear them for more than a few hours normally.

Honestly, if Bonaire had a shopping mall and a baseball team, we’d totally move there. ^_^

@Seek_Kolinahr I experienced the same thing. I spent more time in the doctor office on a nebulizer than I wished to. It would be hot and humid, we would go back to the house and there was mom in a sweater, and not air conditioning, and sister in law smoking like a fire pit.

I preffer colder temperatures, like rain and snow, and long nights make me happy. I hate nights that last like five hours then it’s just sunny all the time, it depresses me, and extreme heat waves make me ill.

@Symbeline That is why I live by the ocean now. It never gets to hot. And my husband loves it, he didn’t like the snow and the cold. I am like my father, he got ill in the heat. He would actually get sick at this stomach and a headache.

Berserker's avatar

I believe that. I sometimes even get nosebleeds.

Rangie's avatar

@Symbeline I take it you don’t live in the heat now.

@Rangie I live in Québec. Nice cold Winters, and damn humid Summers…not as bad as Winnipeg where I was before though, for both counts. Winnipeg Winters are awesome.

Hot and yes. But we unfortunately live in Jersey right now.

@Symbeline, Sounds beautiful. Our winters were like living in a post card. In fact every time a see post card of snow covered mountains with people in it. I can imagine those people moving around in the picture.

Your description sounds exactly like me. I like sunshine a lot but heat I have a hard time with. I prefer cold as you can always get warm. My hubby however is the exact opposite. That is a no-win situation. Luckily we live where weather exists meaning we have all the seasons so we both win and we both lose, lol.

I like hot weather when I am on vacation and can relax by the pool with a cold drink. Living in a hot climate however, would be too much. I would just hate having to go to work and doing my day-to-day things in a climate like that. I would be sweaty, irritable and grouchy all the time.

I’ve discovered over the years, I can handle most any region. But hot and humid, without escape, makes me very mean. Hence my wife and I have decided, that even though she prefers hot/humid to cold/dry, it’s better for everyone involved for us to live in non-equitorial areas or at least places with a legitimate winter (below freezing, snow, ice, etc.)

Rangie's avatar

@wonderingwhy I can relate to you with the heat factor. I wonder why that is. I don’t get that way in the cold weather.

I love hot weather, cold weather, warm weather, and cool weather. That’s why I would struggle to live somewhere where there is only pretty much one season…like in some desert areas, granted it gets cold at night, but it is almost always hot during the day. I love the different seasons. That’s why Colorado is a perfect fit for me…it snowed on Monday and today its 80 degrees. Granted that is annoying at times but I still prefer some variety.

I prefer cold climates, being a native New Englander. My lady preferred the same, being native to Quebec. We’d have stayed in Alaska if economic circumstances permitted. I’d much rather put on more clothes or another stick in the woodstove than suffer in heat and humidity.

casheroo's avatar

My husband can handle the heat better than me, because he used to work in over 100 degree kitchens, so it doesn’t even bother him. I like being warm, but can’t stand humidity..no one I know really likes humidity. Unfortunately, my area is very humid. But, we both don’t want to move just because of the climate.
