I was rooting around in my (deceased) father's stuff and now have a fish hook stuck in my brand new rayon shirt. How do I get it out?

Please don’t mod me. This is a real problem. Fisherpeople, you must have encountered this problem before. How do I get the fish hook out of my shirt without destroying it, the shirt or the hook. Do I have to cut the hook? Is that the only way? It’s a perfectly good hook and lure except that it’s stuck in my shirt. It’s not like he’s going to need the hook or be angry at me for ruining it but is that, cutting it, the only way out of this?

Use a pair of pliers to pinch down the barb near the sharp end of the fish hook. Without the barb, you should be able to remove the hook with no appreciable damage to the fabric.

Cut the barb off with a pair of wire cutters and then pull it back through. That’s the only way I know of to get it out of the material without further damage to the weave.

Bless you @Dr_Lawrence grabbed a pair of needle nose pliers and it worked like a charm! I still have some residual anxiety about destroying my dad’s lures from our bass fishing days. He was pretty easy going but about mid afternoon and I was on my 3rd or 4th lure because I’d lost them to an underwater log or two, he could get pretty irritated. Both shirt and lure survived the operation. Thanks so much!

@lillycoyote I was delighted to know the answer to solve your problem. I like that your still respect your dad’s prized possessions. He would be proud of you!

@Dr_Lawrence Yes, good thing your solution worked because about 2 minutes after I asked the question I had managed to get the 2nd, 2 out of 3 barbs stuck in my shirt because I was fooling with it so much. Even though I was a bit of a train wreck as a bass fisherperson, those were some very good times I got to spend with him, and he was as patient as a man could be, up to a point. :)

Get a pair of small needle nosed pliers with a wire cutter at the base. Snip off the barb with the wire cutter part of the pliers and then slide the de-barbed hook out of the fabric.
