Was this a proper statement for a new Police Chief to make to the public?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) May 4th, 2010

When our new Police Chief was first apponted by the Mayor, the chief went on televison and stated, “i plan on making this city the safest city in America with the lowest crime rate”. was this a proper statement for a new or any police chief to make? i understand the intentions of the statement, but being realistic, is there really anyway to make any city or town safe from crime? you can manipulate the figures so it appears the crime rate is down, but thats not the truth and thats not my point. since no one can predict the number of homicides in a given city, then how can the chiefs statement have any merit? Question: how can the future crime rate of a city be predicted, since the number of homicides are unpredictible?

How very “political” of him. Is it proper? He’s free to say what he likes, but in my opinion it’s designed to do nothing more than display commitment and engender positive feelings, likely to drum up support for his new policies. It’s also horribly deceptive and really says nothing of value. There are many proactive measures that can be taken to reduce crime but at the end of the day policing is largely reactive, particularly when it comes to murder.

It doesn’t have much merit. It’s just typical BS that you hear from public figures:)

The key word is “PLAN.”
Plans change.

If he said promise, I would be concerned.

I was my Chiefs driver for 8 months. during this time period, we got to know each other pretty good. because of my longevity on the department, he chose me. we discussed everything, including this statement he made to the public. do not get me wrong, this Chief has two Masters Degrees and two Associate Degrees and ten years experience in law enforcement in other big cities. he is intelligent, but i never understood why he made this statement. surely, he knew that homicides cannot be predicted and this can make a citys crime rate soar, without notice. we discussed this speech he was about to give and the safe city part. i advised him that this statement might come back to bite him in the rear. but, so far, so good. i would never have made this statement, based on homicide statistics and unpredictability. just a note to further explain the situation.

doesnt everyone want to live in a safe city? and wouldnt the chief of police like to be responsible for that? Nothing wrong with that speech. he has good intentions.

“Do not count on us, we are not legally required to protect you.”

Honesty is the best policy.

Sounds like the standard law and order speech to me. Nobody believes it, not even the politician himself. I think that it expected, expecially in red states.
