Is too much Neosporen a bad thing?

Asked by Plone3000 (668points) May 4th, 2010

I have a cut on my face, so instead of putting a band-aid on it I just glob some Neosporen on it twice a day.

Twice a day isn’t what I’d consider “too much”. I believe the tube says to apply up to 3x daily. Just follow the instructions on the medication, and you should be fine. I’ve heard it can also reduce the chance of scarring.. but I’m not sure if that has been proven.

I’m on the Neosporin website and they don’t say anything about using “too much.” Just follow the directions as @TheOnlyNeffie said, and make sure your cut is well cleaned before each application!

A band-aid, applied loosely after the application of Neosporin or a similar triple antibiotic cream, will prevent dust, pollen, beard prickles (if you are male), stray food crumbs, and the like from sticking to the ointment. It will also remind you not to wash the ointment off.

A blob isn’t necessary. “A little dab’ll do you.”

Like anything else, there is some level at which the use of even an excellent product is excessive. Following directions and making intelligent choices is usually sufficient to avoid excesses.

A topical product used as a preventive really can’t be “overused” whatever is not needed is only wasted. In the treatment of burns and large wounds, large amounts of Neosporin are typically used.
