How can you disinfect a laptop keyboard?

Asked by Tink (8673points) May 9th, 2010 from iPhone

So I’ve been sick for about three days now and I am constantly using my computer which means touching it, sneezing on it and all that good stuff. Obviously.

So I am asking how would I clean the keyboard to make it less germy? Should I spray something directly on it, and if so, what should I spray?

I prefer it to be something that would be found at home. I do have different kinds of disinfectants available though. It can be from a store but I don’t have time to go buy it because I want to do it now.

Just dampen a rag with some white vinegar, and wipe it down. Natural germ killing, and as long as you don’t drown the thing, you’ll be fine. ^_^

@Seek_Kolinahr is right. Never apply liquids to the keyboard directly.

That’s what I thought, the not drowning my computer with liquids part. I shall try some vinegar, thanks!

You could also try the Clorox wipes or a 10% bleach solution and use that to wipe down the keyboard.

At work where I routinely share a work station (and keyboard/mouse) with over 40 people, I make it a point to disinfect the surfaces with Lysol wipes every day before the start of my shift.

Rubbing alcohol. It dries up fast enough to not do any damage. Or you can just spray some Lysol over it, since it has alcohol in it it’ll dry quickly.

All the above ideas are good. I spray mine with Lysol, but I’m not sure that is such a good idea.

@YARNLADY Rubbing alcohol is what computer programmers use, and they generally do a good amount of assembling their own hardware.

Are you worried about getting other people sick that might use the computer? If not you are already sick and touching the germs you already have won’t make you worse.

Sure, just use alcohol or mouthwash.

No it’s just for me. I feel it dirty and I wanted to clean it, even though it won’t do any harm to me, it just eases my conscience.
No one else is allowed to touch my computer.
