Project ideas?

Asked by icehky06 (896points) May 17th, 2010

In Biology my final is a project on basically anything my heart desires (just biology related). I want to do it on something way out of the box. Something no one will pick. I had my hopes high for necrophilia but my science teacher denied my idea. I really want something to get everyone’s attention. Help?

(By the way; I’m not asking for help, I’m just asking for ideas)

What’s the difference between help and giving you ideas?

icehky06's avatar

Help is when you flat out tell facts giving them the information they need on their topic. Ideas are just random things that come to ones mind. Something to help someone out but not giving enough information away. Get it? Or should I keep going?

Use your energy to think up some good ideas. Please, I implore you, do not keep going.

“Help?” does not mean “Help”?

I would like to see someone do something on the Law of Unintended Consequences and the new pressures being inflicted upon Mother nature with all our good intentions. Bioremediation, flushing of medications both whole and digested is creating unexpected effects with chemical soups being found in our waterways and resistant bacteria popping up as never before. What other good deeds are we doing to our biology that will come back to haunt us???

OK, if necrophalia interests you but is, erm… off the table—how about The Science Behind Mummification? A mummified frog or such should prove most interesting.

In my Env. Sci. class we have been talking about bioprospecting – when we search for commercially valuable biochemical and genetic resources from a collection or organisms. For example, the discovery of thermophiles (heat-loving microbes) in/near/around Yellowstone geysers and hot springs have allowed scientists and researchers to use such microbes to replicate DNA, which can be used in things like fingerprinting, disease diagnostics, etc. Or it can be used to catalyze and research processes like fermentation, bioengineering, and production of antibiotics. It would be interesting to learn about the biological and physiological abilities of these thermophiles.

Or: you could look at the habits and characteristics of invasive species.

Or: you could research the biological functions of cave-dwelling organisms.

Or: you could compare deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria and tuberculosis.

How about human decomposition? You can check out The Body Farm for some background on it.
