What is the history of putting chocolate on your pillow in a hotel?

Asked by Zone36 (416points) May 22nd, 2010

I know it’s not universal, but at most of the nicer hotels in the US their turn down service includes a chocolate or mint on your pillow.

So where does this ‘tradition’ come from?

Sweets for the sweet?

Do not know the history behind this tradition, but its an almost a guarantee that this is performed for a “tip” to the lady that cleans your room. if the service is justified, i leave at least two dollars. a 5-Star Hotel….....$5.00. i do not take percentages into consideration, like a 20% tip as given in restaurants, since the maids receive a salary.

I wish I knew. But my tanning salon puts little candies in our rooms. Its just a nice little sentiment that I looove.

I’ve always thought it was just to wish the guest “sweet dreams” it is a lovely little touch I think.

Cary Grant was in St. Louis and wanted to impress a guest, so he asked a hotel worker if he could go into the guest’s room where he placed a mint on the pillow. The hotel worker thought it was such a great idea, he started it as a tradtion.
