Gastric Cancer must be the most confusing cancer there is?

Asked by EmoGirlRoflx (48points) May 23rd, 2010

I am so confused about this. Google does not help, nor do my parents!

So, recently, my mum thinks that I am old enough to know that my Grandpa has Gastric Cancer. I am finding it as a very tough topic to understand.

I will tell you what I think is right.
-Gastric Cancer is Stomach Cancer,
-There are two types, Benign and Malignant tumors
-Benign is the one that can be removed and wont grow back.
-Malignant is the one where it will grow back and if fatal.

Have I understood this right? Please correct me if I am wrong.
Also, where can I read about the cure? If there is one?
Thank you!

That’s right. However, the 2 types, benign and malignant, pertain to ALL cancers, not just stomach cancer.

There is no cure. There is treatment, mostly chemotherapy and radiation, but not a cure. That’s why cancer is so serious.

I see. Thanks! :)

All cancer is malignant rather by definition. Gastric cancer is cured only by surgery. Chemo and radiation are adjunctive measures.

benign means no cancer…there could be lumps that are not harmful, or cancer-filled.

You seem like a very compassionate and loving person.
I wish the best for your grandfather and hope you are able
to spend as much quality time together as possible.

Just came across your question, I am a cancer survivor of Gastric Cancer. First off I hope you grandfather is doing better or recovered. I am wondering if you still needed to understand this cancer if so let me know.
