Why don't middle schools allow student wear shorts?

Asked by Imnotsocool (4points) May 25th, 2010

My school is a middle school, we aren’t allowed to wear shorts. All of the other schools in our discrict allow shorts, even the high school. Why can’t we do it, and what’s so bad about it?

I would ask the principal as I’m sure they have the answer you are looking for.

I have never heard of no shorts. I have heard shorts must be a certain length, but never banned completely. Unless the school requires skirts for the girls, then shorts and pants aren’t permitted.

That’s a question for the school and school board. How long are you in school when it’s really hot weather? If I ran a private school I wouldn’t allow shorts. I would require uniforms.

@perspicacious The schools in FL have shorts as part of the uniforms.

Probably because shorts are too relaxed-looking.

My school was straight retarded with that rule. You couldnt wear shorts until after memorial day, but girls could wear skirts whenever the hell they wanted.

I imagine it’s easier to say that no shorts are allowed, rather than trying to send home every single person wearing shorts that are too short. Which, anymore, the majority of them are way way too short to be worn to school.

oh and when my school did allow shorts it was the finger rule. So with your arms by your sides, if your shorts were shorter than where your finger tips touched your leg, you were sent home.

it was rather unfortunate for this one girl in my class that had really friggin long arms and shorter than average legs. She would always get in trouble for shorts that would be ok on any other person.

@JLeslie I know they do, and most of those districts are in school a number of hot months. That’s why I asked her how long she was in school during really hot weather. However, I favor uniforms for schools and in my state the kids are in school a short time during the hot weather. I would not include shorts in the uniforms here in my state. Also, even if shorts are included in the uniform choices, they are an appropriate length.

It could be that your school is being used as research for the district. It could be that the district is researching alternatives to uniforms without having the students actually wearing them.

None of my schools- (I went to 4 in elementary- we moved once- long story!) and then the junior high and high school I went to allowed them until my senior year. It may be a situation like shego said and they are looking for a solution.

Because it makes them look slutty:D—maybe—

@perspicacious I favor uniforms also.

I don’t see a problem with wearing shorts if girls can wear skirts. In my school growing up we did not have uniforms, but we had a rule, something like must be no more than 4 inches above the knee, or whatever it was. We did break the rule quite often, but no one had their tushie hanging out.

I always tell people who live in northern climates that they have no idea how lucky they are when it comes to worrying about what their children wear to school, since the school year is mostly during cold months.

This sounds like a perfect opportunity to become part of the process. Form a committee of students who want the rule changed, make up petitions for other students to sign, and attend the next school board meeting with your proposal.
