What is the purpose of Patriotism?

Asked by deadleaf (212points) May 29th, 2010

Like fashion, food, ideals, and morality, patriotism is one of those things that we have taken and forsaken. We have changed it’s intent, and put it under a category which is defined by the opinion of millions world wide! So today I want to know, in your mind:

what the purpose is of patriotism in the new age and how it changed from when you were a child to now?

and

do you think that we as an American people are still a proud country of Patriots, or a country who’s Patriots have fallen to the fallacy of what our Televisions, Newspapers, and Internet News Sites have propagated?

(Side bar: One uses a small case “p” for Patriots (unless you are talking about that sports team. Ditto for television, newspapers and internet news sites. However it is good form to start a sentence with a capital W, D, or whatever.)

It’s (patriotism) a big and vague word like truth, ethics, ideal weight and forsaken. I still eat food, have ideals, believe in a moral code and wear some kind of fashion, except when it’s very warm. And I’ve never been able to propagate a fallacy. A geranium, however, I can, from stem cuttings.

Patriotism, and its evolutions, namely nationalism and national chauvinism with boundaries between them being fluid, make it easy for leaders to control the masses and steer them into the direction they want. All can be cultivated via propaganda.

I want to just copypasta @gailcalled‘s answer, but I have a black thumb when it comes to geraniums (gerania? geraniai?)

@Seek_Kolinahr: Start out with one plant from the supermarket. It likes mediocre soil, bright sun and enough water to not let soil dry out. When the stems get leggy, snap tender top (c. 2”) of one off with fingers, leave only 2 -3 small leaves and no blossoms or buds, fill another small pot with mediocre soil, poke hole with a pencil, stuff the stem in and tamp down. Water. Place outside.

I have geraniums that must be ten years old. Sometimes I simply use a secatur and cut off the leggy tops. (Copypasta sounds interesting. Recipe?)

Geranii or gerania, if I remember correctly. I studied Latin about the time that Caesar was crossing the Rubicon.

I think patriotism, no matter what country someone is from, only ruins the world.

Patriotism is what makes men and women put their lives on the line to protect their homes, their families, and their beliefs and ideals. Patriotism, like most other belief systems, is often subverted for selfish ends, and often maligned by those who should know better, but even in today’s cynical world, the patriot is often necessary.

A byproduct of our need to erect invisible bariers between us and our fellow man.

All of us are tribal at heart. You can see this happening on the Internet, only on here it’s not genetics which creates the tribes, it’s social/cultural/political tribes which have formed.

Yeah I know. I wasn’t saying it’s a bad thing, rather than it being inevitable. Even without countries we’d still be this way.
