What is Toby short for?

Is Toby a name on its own, or is it short for something? Was it originally short for something?

Tobias? That’s my best guess, but I doubt most Tobys today are actually named Tobias. Rather old fashioned name.

Yes, Tobias, a Jewish name.

One “famous” example: Toby Ziegler, a character on The West Wing.

As I was looking for a link to the book I so loved as a child, I came across the movie made of it. Thanks for the question!
