Why don't people use turn signals anymore?

Asked by prescottman2008 (780points) June 5th, 2010

If you’re one of what seems like the majority of people who no longer use their turn signals when changing lanes or making a turn please tell me what your thought process is regarding this. I’m curious to know, is it indifference, ignorance, laziness, maliciousness, why wouldn’t you use your signals?

I haven’t noticed this. People in my area use them; you can get a ticket if you do not.

I believe you answered your own question. This is one of my biggest pet peeves while driving. Quite often it is the younger drivers that do this, at least the ones I have noticed. :/

B/c they’re holding a cell phone in one hand and smoking with the other. Yikes

because they’ve got way too much on their hands. They’re probably just lazy, or a majority of people have been “forgetting”. For the younger, newer drivers, they’re probably just texting on their phones!

Sometimes I think it’s an option when buying a car, like air conditioning, cd player, etc.

I haven’t noticed it. I use mine!

Some do. I do, and most drivers I see on the road do.

Most people where I drive do use them. I know I do. My husband laughed one time when I signaled to turn into our driveway and there was no one around. I told him it was a habit and I always did it.

And I agree, it’s extremely irritating when people don’t use them and should. I’m not psychic and truly do not know where they’re going!

I haven’t noticed that where I live. The vast majority of folks use their signals, even those driving vehicles like tractors use hand signals. Maybe this is some urban thing. I use mine automatically, even when I’m driving the only vehicle on the road; habit.

I have asked this to people where I now live because so many people don’t use them. There are two answers I get: 1. I use it when it is necessary, if someone is around me and I need to let them know I am turning. 2. If I put on my signal the guy near me will speed up and not let me in.

All total bogus bullshit. Drives me crazy!

Since, as I understand it, the full term for this is “Signal of intent”, which means you are signaling your intent to the other drivers to allow them time and information to incorporate into their decisions, the lack of use indicates a lack of courtesy. This seems to be of a piece with lots of other overall lack of courtesy on the road.

@Trillian I think people are actually stupid. And lack courtesy true, but mostly stupid. They don’t get how they affect others. Like not putting your lights on a rain storm, how many people say to me, I don’t need my lights, I can see fine. Stupid. They put their own lives in jeopardy.

I’m only going by where I live, too many aggressive drivers on the roads who have to drive 100 mph, even in horrible weather and road conditions and ride your tail because your doing the speed limit. Aggressive drivers don’t give a dam about anyone else on the road so why would they use their turn signals? Ah how I hate driving anymore.

@JLeslie I agree with what you say, but I take it the next step. in my opinion, being lazy and discourteous is an integral part of being an idiot. As expounded on here.

Global warming and the carbon footprint of burning that incandescent bulb…

@jonsblond I beg to differ. I’ve seen older people switch lanes, make turns, run lights, run stop signs, etc. without using turn signals just as often as I’ve seen younger people do it – if not, more.

People dont think. That’s as simple as I could put it. I’ll admit – I’ve made my honest mistakes on the road before, but I think from time to time we people forget just how hazardous driving really can be and the amount of caution it all really calls for. I dont think anyone is a perfect driver – but I think people as a whole need to pay a little bit more attention to their habits while driving.

Yeah, the people I talk to who don’t signal are in their 40’s and 50’s, my peers. I would bet the kids who don’t signal a lot of time have parents who don’t signal. Although maybe it is slightly more observed in the younger generation, not sure. Just because they tend to not understand consequences as well.

It’s a global epidemic. Reason: not enough tickets from the police.

Nobody cares anymore! It’s the “Me,Me, Me” generation! Driving the same 70 mile commute for the last 29 years, I’ve noticed a BIG change in the way others drive, especially in the last 7 years or so. (about the time everyone had a cell phone) My biggest peeves are no turn signals, no headlights, cutting across the yellow on a left curve, not a clue as to “right of way” and oblivious idiots in the left lane. The only thing these nit-wits think makes them good drivers is “Going Slow!” I’ve actually asked people if they consider themselves good drivers and the answer is always “YES”. But watch the same person (and so many others I’m beginning to think maybe it’s me…) drive and they all drive the exact same way! It kills me! “no signals, no lights in rain or an hour before sunrise, tractor-trailer turns, crossing the yellow, riding brakes, taking rights-on-red with the sign saying “NO….”, sitting at a green light till it turns yellow, taking my side of the street and EXPECTING me to drive thru someone’s front lawn so they don’t have to stop for the mail truck pulled over on their side of the street, talking on the damn phone and pulling right out in front of me then giving ME the finger when I honk the horn or even trying to “Jack me up” by slamming on their brakes….ya’ll know what I mean if you can grasp the concept of something as simple as turn signals. At least I know I’m not alone here. ;)
