How to create a Shadow effect in Photoshop?

Asked by jhbao (212points) June 6th, 2010

How do I do the drop shadow effect like the one from this website http://intridea.com/ (their yellow feature section)? I want to use Photoshop to create that shadow effect, any hints?

1. make a dark grey rectangle the a little smaller than the object
2. make sure its rasterized, right click layer and select ‘rasterize layer’
3. in the top menu: filter > blur > gaussian blur…adjust desired amount
4. in the top menu: edit > transform > warp
5. adjust the anchor points by dragging them around to get that curved shadow shape

this is just off the top of my head, its 1:17am and im ready for sleep. Just mess around with those steps, youll get the intended effect down after a bit.

What do you mean by “Yellow feature section”? Do you mean the little shadow around the yellow box?

Easy way is to create the box in a new transparent layer. Then double click on that layer to open the effects window. Click on “drop shadow” and adjust until you get what you want.

But if you want it to be exactly like the shadow in your example, then do what @wenn said.

If double-clicking on the layer activates the layer name box, you can also access the effect by right-clicking the layer and selecting Blending Options… from the context menu, and then checking Drop Shadow.

In this case I would duplicate the shape (or at least the bottom portion) into a separate layer use a customized gradient to create the shadow effect. From there it’s just a matter of positioning to preference. @wenn‘s how-to would be easier though.
