If both are purchased today, and taken care of similarly, which will outlast the other - an LP or CD?

Asked by zenele (8257points) June 7th, 2010

I have old LP’s – so I know they can last 50–100 years at least – but will CD’s last? I’m talking about a new, original CD in its jewel case.

What do you think? Any studies done on CDs yet?

I don’t think studies have been done…but, I’d guess CDs. Old vinyl has stood the test of time, however, as long as heat and scratches are avoided. Tough one, really. Good question.

I own LP’s that date from the 1950’s. I don’t know of any CD’s that old. But I have some CD’s from the 1990’s, so I guess the jury’s still out.
