Finally a Trek question... so, heard any rumours about a new series?

Asked by zenele (8257points) June 8th, 2010

It’s been too long, eh Trekkers?

What’s up about a new series? New movie at least? Are they going to continue with the kids in the (new) Star Trek Movie they made last year?

What’s the scoop?

What have you heard? Who’s producing? Who are the writers? Enterprise was really a disapointment.

Trekkies.

And if they try to frack up the story by continuing this alternate universe, I might just have to turn in my tricorder.

@Seek_Kolinahr I was trying to be respectful. Trekkies, maybe before you were born, found that term derogatory and preferred Trekkers. Perhaps it has come full circle?

Do I have to go get my uniform?

CBS now owns the franchise, but Paramont retains the movie rights and there is a movie tentatively scheduled for a 2012 release date. There are several Official Star Trek theme video games, animated TV series, and online action games. There is also Cruise Trek, an ‘official media event’ in October 2010.

YARNLADY's avatar

@zenele The official debate has never quite been resolved – there are still people lining up on both sides.

@YARNLADY It’s 6 a.m. here: did you say Tom Cruise is the next Captain Kirk?

Seek's avatar

^_^ It’s become a kind of personal choice thing.

I’ve recently heard someone say “Trekkers dress up, Trekkies just watch the show.” the same day as someone else said “Trekkies think it’s real life, Trekkers know it’s made up”.

I’ve heard Gene Roddenberry himself (on a video clip) say “I made it up, and you’re ‘Trekkies’.” That was good enough for me. ^_^

zenele's avatar

I like that @Seek_Kolinahr. Cool.

lillycoyote's avatar

Tom Cruise as Captain Kirk? An abomination.

YARNLADY's avatar

@zenele @lillycoyote HA HA HA That’s exactly how rumours get started – no, I said there is a cruise – as in ocean cruise called Cruise Trek 2010 in October.

@YARNLADY The flotilla to Gaza was a Cruise ship and raided by aliens disguised as Israelis?

YARNLADY's avatar

@zenele I didn’t know you were a Sci Fi writer. Are you published yet?

zenele's avatar

Nope. But I know someone who is.

I just want a show set at the Academy. I think it’d be fun to see them learn, then separate into three different ships and set out. I can dream, right?

Trillian's avatar

@zenele I’ve read that book, have you?

There have been rumors for several years about a series based on the Excalibur series of Star Trek novels. The Calhoun character might be too over-the-top for many fans though. A moody rebel with a primitive streak might be a good counterpoint to the previous lead characters. Zak Kebron would be a challenge to play.

zenele's avatar

@Trillian Just the first chapter online – and now I’ve listened to it being read – which is great! I’m going to get myself a copy – I never read books – but I would like to support Matt. I think we all should.

Trillian's avatar

I want to send mine to him for an autograph, but maybe I’ll just show up at a book signing sometime..

zenele's avatar

In Germany.

Trillian's avatar

Yes, that’s the inconvenient bit. I haven’t quite worked that out yet.

zenele's avatar

Maybe if we buy enough books, he’ll become so famous he’ll be flown to America for a book signing.

@Seek_Kolinahr As far as I’m concerned, the alternate universe doesn’t exist. Kinda like that season of Dallas way back when. It was all a dream.

mattbrowne's avatar

I’m in Arizona and Utah from August 17 till September 9. Family vacation.

I’m happy to sign any copy!

mattbrowne's avatar

And I hope the rumors are true ! For a new series, not just a new movie.

Seek's avatar

@Dr_Dredd

Yeah, or all of ST: Enterprise. It doesn’t count either.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr I kinda liked Enterprise. A guilty pleasure for me… :-)

I want to see either one of the following new TV series:

Star Trek: Temporal Corps

or

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

or

Star Trek: We Are Borg (Star Trek from the Borg’s perspective. Each week, they assimiliate a different planet. Each race poses different challenges and risks, but in the end, resistance is futile)

or

Star Trek: The Love Boat (the same premise as The Love Boat [perhaps thay can trekify the theme song from the original Love Boat…]: romantic drama on board an interstellar cruise ship. Being a cruise ship, it doesn’t veer far off established routes and doesn’t get into as dangerous situations as the Enterprise, but the universe being what it is, some temporal anamolies are inevitable)

HungryGuy's avatar

And BTW, I also agree that ST:Enterprise took place in an alternate universe and doesn’t exist either.

HungryGuy's avatar

Oh, and I would love it if they made a single crossover episode where the Enterprise from TNG gets dispatched to investigate a ship in distress that’s reportedly running a smuggling operation across the Neutral Zone…....and it’s Serenity from Firefly.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@HungryGuy Or the Millenium Falcon… :-)

HungryGuy's avatar

@Dr_Dredd – Right! :-)

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@HungryGuy BTW, Han shot first!
