How can I stop from vomiting?

Asked by windysparrow (11points) June 12th, 2010

I’ve had a cold for the last few weeks and thought I was in the clear. This morning I woke up at 1 am with a fever. I used a few different thermometer’s but all of them said I was at about 96 degrees. That was weird. Then I had to run to the bathroom and I projectile vomited twice. Then at 3 am my fever broke. At about 5 am I woke up again with a fever and puked green bile a few times. My husband told me I needed to eat a piece of bread and drink a little water and see how long I could hold that down. After about 30 minutes I vomited that. Then at about 6 I vomited again and I think that was bile. It was bitter and yellow. Then at 9 am I puked bile a few more times. I’ve had a few drinks of water here and there and nothing to eat. I can’t keep it down and actually I don’t want to eat. I’ve slept pretty much all day. I don’t know if I have the stomach flu. My husband and son ate what I ate the night before and they’re fine. I took some pepto bismal and vomited. Is there anything else I can do to alleviate the nausea? I just need to know if there’s anything else to make me feel better.

Try peppermint tea or valerian root capsules….drink water to prevent dehydration. Call a Doc if this persists!! I hope you feel better.

Meclizine is the only over the counter medication that I know of that is an anti emetic. Your only trouble will be, of course, holding it down. Send your husband out for it, it’s sold as a motion sickness medication. Give it 24 hours. If you still are having symptoms, get to a doctor.

Aww, sorry that you’re sick. That is the worst feeling. If you can’t keep anything down, you probably aren’t meant to. You have to let it run it’s course. In the meanwhile, get some gatorade or powerade and water it down 50/50 water to beverage. Take it in sips, don’t chug it or take big swigs. If you don’t stop throwing up soon, you should probably call your doctor. Better to be safe than sorry. Feel better soon!

I am sorry that you feel so shite, and i have no advice for you other then the obvious: visit a doctor.
This made me chuckle (you know, with the vomit and all in mind): “My husband and son ate what I ate the night before…”

Try sniffing fresh ginger.

After vomiting 481 times, I think you should probably see a doctor.
Feel better soon.

I will see how the rest of today goes and then if I don’t get better I’ll visit the doctor. Clinics are closed around here on the weekends. Don’t feel like going to the hospital.

Sips of ginger ale might help. (only if it’s made with real ginger)

Until you stop vomiting, stop eating. You can drink water, or Gatoraide, but don’t eat anything.
After 2 hours of no vomiting, BART is okay. That’s Bananas, Apple Sauce, Rice, and Tea.
And get a pregnancy test.

Be careful about taking medications to stop vomiting when you don’t know the cause. Vomiting is the body’s way of purging toxins so to stop that when you don’t know what you are fighting is a bad idea.

Instead to make it more bearable get some Popsicles and slowly suck on them. This will help keep you hydrated and often the slow trickle of icy liquid will stick around longer in your stomach..and if it doesn’t cherry flavored puke is 99% better than bitter stomach acid.

@filmfann it’s actually the BRAT diet that you’re referring to. =P I had to do with with my daughter because she was throwing up and constantly had diarrhea.

I’ve been feeling a little better! Thank you everyone for your kind advice. I ate a saltine cracker a little while ago and then had a handful of cherrios. I also ate some ice cubes and took a lukewarm bath. I just hope tonight goes better and that I can get some more good rest. Haven’t vomited since 10 am. Felt like it a few times but didn’t. I don’t think this has anything to do with possibly being pregnant. It seems like a virus to me. My last pregnancy I was lucky and didn’t have problems with throwing up. I did get morning sickness (through out the day) but never anything like this.

Try ginger. It is antiemetic and will stop you vomiting and feeling nauseous.

Glad you’re feeling better. Peppermint tea or ginger tea is a good thing to sip as soon as you’re able to keep down small quanities of liquid. Both peppermint and ginger are soothing on the stomach. Sucking minty sweets might help too (if they’re made with real mint essence and not just artificial flavourings).
