Does anyone have an idea of the disease that killed Job and his family in the bible?

Asked by cornbird (1750points) June 22nd, 2010

In the bible, Job was one of GOD’s most trusted followers, and he was given a test of faith, whereby the devil killed his sons and give him a disease that made boils cover his whole body. Does anyone have an idea of what that disease may be? A clue I have gathered is that the bible said that the land opened up and a great stink came from it which afterwards killed his family and made him into that state.

Well, Job wasn’t killed, even in the story.

As far as his family, if I remember correctly, “God” blew up Job’s house and made the roof fall on them. So… blunt force trauma/compression sickness.

Tornado.

ninja_man's avatar

Job didn’t die of a disease, nor did his family.

cornbird's avatar

Oh yes…my mistake..Job was not killed. I was just concerned with the disease thats all. His sons however died of a disease that the devil sent. Anyhow, what matters is that they were affected by a disease, just what was it?

Seek's avatar

There was no disease. The house fell on them.

Who got the boils? Didn’t they kill his livestock, ruin his crops and make the family sick with boils or something? or was it just Job that got boils? Horrible story. god sucks.

cornbird's avatar

Yes there was a disease. He was covered in boils and was sitting in the street and he even broke a pottery boil and was digging out the boils.

Seek's avatar

That was Job.

2:7 – So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.

That is so gross, but not telling as to the nature of the “illness”.

Either way, it’s a fairy tale. Does it really matter?

As for his sons and daughters:

1:18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

cornbird's avatar

Yes it does matter or I wouldnt have asked the question. Forget the children then, i have read a different version or something but what was the disease?

cornbird's avatar

And i would appreciate if you dont call it a fairy tale….it may be a tale to you but not to me and other Christians on this site. Please have some respect.

ninja_man's avatar

Ha, what other version would that be, @cornbird ?

cornbird's avatar

Just checked….sorry again i was mistaken it was only Job.

Other Christians on this site have stated that the old testament is a story book that doesn’t matter anymore. I can’t make all of you happy, so why bother trying?

I’m just not sure why it matters to know what specific disease the magical angel struck your mythical pious man with. I mean, we are talking about an age long before the advent of modern medicine, when illness was a “fell spirit” infecting a person, instead of a bacteria/virus/parasite.

chyna's avatar

The disease Job had could have been leprosy, which was a common disease back then. signs of leprosy

cazzie's avatar

What ever modern disease’s name you give to it, it will be an assumption. and to quote myself from a separate thread…‘He’s a talking sponge, Mom,’

ninja_man's avatar

@cazzie And here I was thinking it was the ‘boils’ disease…

Seek's avatar

If it were modern-day, I’d say it was MRSA. MRSA causes boils – and scraping them out with broken pottery is a good way to spread it. But, that particular strand of Staph evolved from the extensive use of antibiotics, and thus didn’t exist in Job’s day.

jackm's avatar

Didn’t he masturbate and piss off god?

Seek's avatar

That was Onan – though it wasn’t really masturbation… he just pulled out.

chyna's avatar

@jackm Um, could you quote me that verse?
lol

cornbird's avatar

@Chyna Dont bother with him….hes just being a fool that comment would soon be removed. The mighty wind sounded like a tornado and the disease could be leprosy, that would mean that leprosy was one of the first diseases in ancient times?

chyna's avatar

@cornbird Yes, it was a very common disease then.

cazzie's avatar

@cornbird give it a break. You’re over reading into an ancient fable. Leprosy doesn’t so much cause boils as described in the verse. You’re trying to make sense of something that doesn’t need logic. OK?

If god simply wanted to put boils all over a man’s body, he could do that. He’s a talking sponge. It doesn’t need a specific pathogen that we would recognise in today’s medical journals. Read it for what it is. God gave him boils all over his body.

Seek's avatar

Of course not. Leprosy, like every other illness on Earth, developed through millions of years of evolution. And there’s nothing in that verse to suggest that the disease was leprosy – even though the Bible is huge on blaming everything on Leprosy (even moldy walls of your house. See Deuteronomy).

cornbird's avatar

@cazzie If you dont see the logic you dont have to answer…get the logic in that? Im trying to do some reasearch into the bible for reasons of religious knowledge for my carrer.—-Dont believe i have to explain all of this.—

cazzie's avatar

Doesn’t faith defy logic? (edit…. ) At times.. I mean. At times… faith must defy logic. it’s at the root of it’s definition. And the talking sponge argument works for both sides.

cornbird's avatar

@cazzie “Baby dont hurt me, dont hurt me, no more…”

cazzie's avatar

and thus ended his quest for truth….. (?)

Seek's avatar

“Truth” isn’t exactly the word I’d use…

cazzie's avatar

Nah… I was being generous. xkcd.

CMaz's avatar

Steve Jobs?

LuckyGuy's avatar

Didn’t I see someone with that affliction on “House”?

Seek's avatar

Leprosy and MRSA have both appeared on House, yes.
