Grilling with gas harmful for health?

Asked by Otto_King (1122points) June 25th, 2010 from iPhone

As I heard, the smell of PB gas is an added chemical, which burns harmful particles into meat during grilling. True?

There are some health consequences from eating charred meat; I have not heard that gas grills expose one to more danger than charcoal grills.

In fact, charcoal briquettes contain chemicals for binders, and the lighter fluid also has volatile compounds that could condense on the meat.

It is my preference to grill over split hardwood, or hardwood charcoal, lit by non-chemical means.

I have to agree with @dpworkin. besides, split wood usually enhances the flavor of the meat, I am partial to apple, cherry and hickory wood myself.

If you don’t make your own charcoal, Royal Oak is about as good as you can get commercially.

Moderation in the consumption of grilled meat is the best choice unless you are willing to do without it altogether.

The food police would have you believe that your basic statement included meat at all, thus harmful.

I grill on both gas and charcoal. I grill fish, poultry and meat, as well as just about every type of vegetable. I’ve been doing it for years. The greatest health risk I have seen is when I toss the match on the grill because the push button is broken.

Too much char is an alleged carcinogen. I try to keep the char down.

In any case, mmmmm!

gas is bad, charred meat is bad, charcoal is bad. Moderation. Use carcinogens in moderation? Or pray for a good immune system.

everything is bad for you anymore, seems like all they want to do is find more things bad for you. How about this. Quit worry about it and enjoy your life.

@Mikewlf337 No offense, but I’m not a hypochonder. Very few people enjoy more the culinary life then I do. :) Even if I would get an obvious answer of “gas=poison”, I’d still will go out today afternoon, and barbecue with my gasgrill. Even Burger King makes their meats on gas. I just wanted to know what is the people’s opinion about this, and I like your point of you, this is how I’m living. Everything what is good for taste, bad for health. Need to find a balance…
